January - Best Birth/Hatching in UK Zoos

This poll is an idea I've thought of to decide amongst zoo chatters what they believe to be the best new birth/hatching in UK zoos. I will run this competition every month with the possibility of an end of year contest for all the monthly winners. I have created a similar thread for new species as well. In addition I am hoping to run the competition for Australasia, North America and Europe excluding the UK too.

In terms of the rationale behind your votes just pick whichever piece of news excited/interested/impressed you the most. If there are any glaring omissions please let me know.

Western Chimpanzee, Black Bear and Chinese Crocodile Lizard all occurred in February. and will be included in that months poll. Sulawesi Macaque is in the poll. Had been unaware of the White Faced Saki birth.

I am sure some of the Hamerton births were actually in December, but zoochat didn't know about them until it was announced. But then it's not the only births that happened to miss I will let the zoo that has them break it just before easter.

Yes I am aware that not all dates will be accurate, however it is difficult to avoid this. I am deciding which month to place them in based on when the details are released to the public. However if the article states a particular date in a previous month then I will include it in that months poll. That is why I waited most of February before creating the January poll.

The simplest thing would be to re-name the thread (and its sister one), so the somewhat ambiguous title includes the word 'announced', so '..announced in January' etc. Many zoos would not publicise a birth or arrival as it happened, waiting until they were more sure of the situation, or indeed for a 'better' time to announce it. Speculation here (and elsewhere) is often the reason, and even zoos which used to make a great deal of future plans, are often now considerably more cautious when releasing information.

I love the idea of this thread - its certainly a good place for people to discuss all the recent births and such... but I do agree that if we're being pedantic to include "announced" in February's. There really were some fantastic births early in the year, and it would be a shame to miss out on them because they weren't announced in time for the poll.

I wouldn't worry too much @britishzoofan - I think the point of the thread is clear and you can only do your best with the info you personally have when making the post. Andrew's suggestion makes sense and if any are missed off by mistake then people can also just discuss it in the thread. It is a chat forum after all. I was personally delighted by the news of Winghams bear cub who was born on 29th Jan but from your list of who had been announced - I'd have to go with the Golden Possum.

I haven't actually given any reasoning for my vote, so here we go. My vote went to the Bamboo lemur - since their arrival at Paignton, I've developed a huge soft spot for the species. Whilst small, the UK population is doing great, and they're a fantastic species to watch. So that's why the lemur gets my vote

Yes the Asiatic Black Bear cub is definitely one I missed off. For some reason I had noted it down as occurring in February.
