I’m now looking at taking a month and driving through the American Southwest starting on January 1st. As with my previous road-trips the goal will be to visit zoos! I’ll also be visiting Natural History Museums, National and State Parks, Monuments and Recreation areas…as well as sporting goods stores to check out their taxidermy. Lodging will be a combination of commercial hotels, campgrounds, and military lodging where available. Below is my itinerary and any suggestions or advice (and I got some good ones during my Florida to Alaska road trip in November 2022) would be appreciated. Particularly regarding strategies when visiting certain zoos I’ve never been too or haven’t been too in years.

Itinerary: (Lots of early morning and north drive to increase chance of wildlife sightings)

Depending on arrival time you may be able to squeeze in the Bass Pro or Phoenix Zoo on the first day, neither takes a lot of time. The zoo is close to the airport as well, which helps. I can do the zoo in a couple of hours by myself, 1/2 day with my son. They should be doing their zoo Christmas event, so seeing part of the zoo at night would be possible.

Wildlife World is pretty huge - it is a open to close zoo for me. I'll be there a couple of days ahead of you, sometime at the end of December :) So, doing it and then Bass Pro is a good option.

If another day was possible in Phoenix area I would recommend OdySea and Butterfly Wonderland, they are both really nice facilities and being in the same complex is convenient.

Thank you! I will have some time in Phoenix at the end of the drive as well.
Hah, I just saw that ;)

I see you have the Phoenix Zoo listed on two days, is there a reason?

I like that natural history museum a lot, it isn't huge but it is well done. Personally I would do the museum and Odysea on the same day and the zoo on one day. You could easily do the zoo and botanical gardens together if you were interested in that.

Thank you. I guess I thought the Phoenix Zoo was bigger.

It is a solid AZA style zoo, but it is not really that big - especially compared to Wildlife World. The new areas add some time for sure, but even then I can accomplish seeing the whole place in 3-4 hours. We usually take longer to do kid things like ride the carousel and play on the playground area for a bit.

Pro tip: Around 70% of the Phoenix zoo can be accessed on a Rideable scooter....if you want to zoom through the zoo real fast you can use that to get around.

Wildlife world also has scooters and you can really see most of the zoo (maybe 75%) on it...but the cost of renting them adds up. Wildlife world also has paid train and tram rides, I prefer the train ride as the tram takes you through a lot of areas that you will still want to walk around to see the side and smaller exhibits.

Personally, I would say you could get a lot more out of this trip by doubling up zoos that are relatively close together and small. At least for now, it looks like you are going to have a few days with not a whole lot going on other than a small zoo and a relatively short drive. It would open up extra days to add more zoos or other things you'd like to do.

Obviously all people take different amounts of time at zoos, but for example, my sister and I did the Amarillo Zoo, Hillcrest Park Zoo, Spring River Zoo, and Living Desert in Carlsbad all on the same day back in 2022. While you are also doing the Carlsbad Caverns on the day you do Living Desert, Hillcrest Park and Spring River are the only things you have listed for those days and I'd be surprised if anyone can spend more than 2-3 hours at them. Similarly, we did Alameda Park Zoo, a couple hours in White Sands, and El Paso Zoo all in the same day. You may have other things planned, or be one of the ZooChatters that can spend all day at even the tiniest of places, but my two cents is that you're going to be looking for things to do on some of these days.

(EDIT: I've always used Snowleopard's trips as a guide when planning out timing as he often says how long he spent at a facility. While sometimes I'm faster than him and other times I'm slower, I've found it gives me a good base line and starting point. If you have his book, those times often feel like an over estimation for me.)

My other comment on the itinerary would be you are adding a lot of extra drive time to your itinerary, but I assume you know this as you are the one who planned it and have a reason for it. I, personally, would make the trip much more linear (ie flying into San Diego and working east and then fly home from Texas or vice versa), and just eat the extra fees that come with returning the car rental to a different place (for me the couple hundred dollars you are saving on this is just not worth the extra time, and gas money for that matter, you will be spending on the road).

Only other heads-up I would give is that you may want to have a back up plan/make sure they are open when it comes to the National Parks and any other federal properties. A quick Google search says physically accessible areas (ie roads, trails, lookouts, etc) are open, but things like visitor centers, campgrounds, etc., are closed. While I would hope this shutdown ends by January, you just never know with the way it is currently going.

The Safari Park can comfortably be done in one day. It may be far larger than the zoo, but it's also far more spread out and has less to see overall. I spent six hours there last year which allowed me to see everything, linger at the platypus, and still do the tram twice. Instead I recommend heading to San Diego a day earlier and doing the following:

-Natural History Museum in the morning. This way you aren't rushing through SeaWorld to get here in time or rushing to see the whole museum before closing.

-Living Coast Discovery Center* in the afternoon, located in Chula Vista 15 minutes from the museum. This collection is something of a hidden gem in my opinion and has a nice lineup of native species; mostly raptors, shorebirds and fish. Beautiful setting as well within the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge.

-Birch Aquarium in the late afternoon/evening, located in La Jolla. Another small yet highly professional facility. The main gallery was just revamped this year and there's also the only little blue penguins on the west coast. Afterwards head down to La Jolla Cove to watch the sea lions and explore the neighborhood.

*Worth noting that the Living Coast Discovery Center is not open on Mondays and Tuesdays. Perhaps bump up SeaWorld a day earlier and follow my itinerary above whichever day you don't do the zoo. Safe travels!

Thank You! Yes if I can do the small New Mexico Zoos in tandem, I wouldn’t mind adding Cameron Park Zoo in Waco Texas or the National Pacific War Museum and LBJ Ranch in Fredericksburg and Johnson City Texas.

I'll send you a link to my mostly TX, but also NM/Oklahoma road trip as I still have it. Personally, I think you can combine a good number of your "zoo days" to free up more time elsewhere. Another area of your trip I see combining days as a possibility is around San Antonio/Austin. The one benefit we did have that likely isn't true for you is we did have extended "summer hours" for places like SeaWorld San Antonio and the San Antonio Zoo, so we were able to fit a bunch of places in and end our days with those two as they were open late.

Ooh, I've got a somewhat similar (but much smaller) trip planned for August of next year. It will start and finish in Salt Lake City, and loop around through Denver, Albuquerque, Tucson, Phoenix, and back to Salt Lake City. I'm excited to see how this plays out for you.
Yikes....August in Phoenix and Tucson! I was there this past June and it was blazing already.
