Jardin des Plantes Jardin des Plants - New arrivals and other news

Great news: a baby female orangutan was born at the zoo on 17 october!
Now the family is composed by 4 females and one male, Bangii (12 years old), who has become father for the first time.

Yeah, I just saw this on La Menagerie's Facebook page!! It's great news. I wasn't sure what to expect on my initial visit, but the staff really does a bang up job given their limitations.

There have been recent observations of tool use by Visayan warty pigs at Jardin des Plantes, the first time tool use has been recorded in any pig.

Priscilla, the adult female warty pig, has been observed using pieces of bark and sticks to dig nest pits in the ground. The behaviour has been picked up, with varying degrees of success, by two other pigs in the enclosure.

Here is an article about the discovery:
These rare pigs can dig it. With a tool, that is. And moonwalk too

And you didn't tell to Zoochatters ! ;)
Nope, I thought as the offspring had been born last year everyone on here would know!

Actually, I am really surprised it has not yet created a racket or ruck and ensuing mayhem here.
(maybe the nerds and freaks have an off-day ...?)

The light didn't help with taking photos but I have a few pictures of the baby. I'll upload them soon
