For a bit of fun, I am scheduled to get a tour of Giants of the Savanna tomorrow. I might be tempted to write of a little review of what I see...

So you mean you are "touring" a still-under-construction exhibit, right? They don't open until Memorial Day weekend, right?

I plan, by the way, to be there a day or two before they open. Hopefully they'll let me see it.

Y'know, I was THIS CLOSE today to going to the Dallas Zoo to take a look at construction. Decided against it cause Grad School has demands, like papers and stuff. I even drove right by the Fort Worth Zoo today (Apple store is next to it, needed repairs) and was tempted to go there as well. Oh well, week and a half and freedom returns.

I'll be interested in your opinion! Landscaping is pretty far along but a great deal will now happen in a very short time. I'll be on site mid-week myself

@ANyhuis, yes it is still under construction. Opens memorial day weekends as planned.

@Ituri - I won't.

@Zooplantman - I've gotten a good look at the overall status of the planting from the monorail. Some of my colleagues have been out on site, and my boss even mentioned that some genius was planting the Savanna. Do you know what days you will be there?

:p

I'll be there Wednesday and Thursday...although each time I'm there I can never find a minute to leave the site. Maybe we can wave from the monorail!

I have returned from the promised land. It is flowing with milk and honey and..elephants.

Step aside CGF. Move over ARoL. There is a new Giant in the room. I honestly think Giants of the Savanna will take its rightful place as one of the top 5, if not the top, zoo exhibit in the country. I have only seen now an unfinished site, but what is there is amazing.

Now how the Hell is anything supposed to live up to that? :D

What can I saw, you have done a damn fine job out there. Seriously the planting looks great even in this stage. Can't wait until everything gets finished planting and starts growing in. A few planting questions. Along the back fence will there be a plant barrier? Will there be a plant barrier between the cheetahs and the water filtration?

First, thanks!

Second, yes it is already planted and will look good this summer, although it won't hide the fence for 2-3 years yet I think.

Third, that's the area we'll be working on tomorrow!

Cheetahs? Where are they in the project? The plans I've seen mention lions and wild dogs in the Predator area--is that where they're going?

Wild dogs are no longer in the plans. Seems that they were either too had to acquire or none were to be had. They changed their plans a few months ago.

I've got photos to upload of the Savanna now. It of course is in an unfinished state, but should give an overview of the project.

How about some updates from around the state.

Went to DWA this week. New exhibits every time I visit and this time was no exception. This time was a new Caimen Lizard exhibit. Very tiny for the 1 juvenile lizard. There was more construction going on throughout the main hall so I'm sure more exhibits will be on the way.

Just saw this in the news. San Antonio finally has a new elephant. A 55 year old Asian named Boo. It's about time they did something. It may not be the something that people wanted, but at least it is.

I posted this in the Fort Worth thread, but there is a new baby Bonobo there probably a few weeks old. There are again 2 Indian Rhinos on exhibit (previously only the male was where so I am assuming a new female came in). I'm pretty sure they received a new male Black Rhino as well. I still have the same feeling about MOLA as I did on the first visit, OK, but not mind blowing. I did find out that part of the blah attitude I have is that some of the smaller exhibits are the exact same as in the old Herpatarium. I mean that they were lifted entirely from one building and installed in the other. Supposedly this was to make acclimatization easier for the animals. Still with six months of closure of the old building I'm sure there was more to it than just that.

Also visited Caldwell on Monday. Great as always. Seemed to be missing their Wildebeests and Warthogs though. Maybe they were just off exhibit that day.

Interesting re the rhinos. I have been saying for the past couple of months in the Fort Worth thread that there only was a lone male rhino (Arun ex San Diego). Now, you confirm that the FW Nepalese cow has gone elsewhere .... too and a new female has come in? Any idea from where?

No clue. I'm pretty sure that the cow they had left, but there is a new one. No clue where she came from. As for the new male Black that is a little easier and a lot closer. He came from the facility just down the road. ;)

Any idea which bull from Dallas?

Will Dallas itself retain southern blacks or switch (since they do not breed)?

Indy was scheduled to go to Ft. Worth as he was the older of the two. Niko is staying and will be moving to a different area of the zoo. The only other thing i know is that there is a big push to bring in whites as well. The director is a big time rhino fan.

I just wanted to report that I went to Dallas' Giants of the Savanna this past weekend, and while there, I met our "JBNBSN99". What a great guy! He met me for lunch (at Giants' beautiful new Cafe -- with up-close lion viewing). After talking zoos over lunch, he took me on one of his monorail tours. He is a really great tour guide! He's a definite story-teller, making all of the animals seen on the tour much more interesting. It is surprising that he's not a father on his own, as he definitely told stories that children could enjoy. A bit later in the day, JBNBSN99 joined me again to give me a personalized tour of Dallas' older part of the zoo. Thanks, dude!

@Zooplantman: While touring Giants of the Savanna with the Zoo's Director and their Head of Animal Collections, both of them bragged a lot about YOUR work in planting the exhibit.
