Interesting list. One clarification though.... are you rating ALL Texas zoos or just the ones you've reviewed on here, because I thought both El Paso and Gladys Porter both had dedicated Asian sections, and from what I've heard of El Paso's it may rival Fort Worth I'm not sure. Never been to either, but something to think about I suppose.

Good point. I have yet to go to El Paso or Gladys Porter so I can't make a comment. One of these days maybe I will. I might try and make it to Brownsville soon, but I can get to Chicago easier and quicker than I can get to El Paso!

Maybe it's just me but I'd rate Houston higher than Fort Worth for primates... At Houston, the collection is better and the exhibits are better. Fort Worth has no lemurs or new world primates, and only 2 old world monkeys. In terms of places to see apes, Fort Worth is first on the list, but primates in general...Fort Worth wouldn't even be the runner up for me...

I last saw the Oklahoma City Zoo almost exactly a year ago, in 15-degree December cold. Even in that weather, its excellence was clear. I'd agree with SnowLeopard that it's clearly among the Top 15, if not Top 10 zoos in America.

By the way, it's a very humbling thing to read that someone (Jbnbsn99) got a book you wrote for Christmas! Enjoy!

You could of signed my copy Anyhuis, LOL :D

You might have a good point there. I think I actually agree with you there.

I assume the ratings may switch somewhat if and when you have tallied Brownsville, Gladys Porter Zoo. Ever since first flicking through any IZY books I have come to consider GPZ in Brownsville as among the top collections in the Southern US.

I Hope so. I've wanted to see their collection for years. My main goal is to make the 12 hour one way drive just to see the Jentik's Duiker and the Bushbuck. I'd be happy just seeing them.

OKC definitely is a great zoo. I will probably go back sometime soon (there's a natural history museum nearby I want to visit too). Can't wait for the new Asian area.

I actually got several books on zoos for Christmas. I told my parents I would tell the author I got their book.

I think I've got another trip planned. This will be a big one. 3 days 3 animal attractions.

Day 1.
7 hours of Driving.
Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi
4-5 more hours of Driving
Day 2.
Gladys Porter Zoo
Day 3
6 Hours of Driving
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch outside of San Antonio
5 more hours of driving

Now I just have to find a cheep hotel in Brownsville for 2 nights.

Primates
1. Dallas Zoo. Chimpanzee and Gorilla habitats are amazing. Best two ape exhibits around. Mandrills again in a great home. Gibbons, Spider Monkeys, Grey Titi Monkeys, Saki Monkeys, Mona Monkeys, Colobus Monkeys, and Allen's Swamp Monkeys, and 3 species of Lemur round out the collection. None are in a disappointing home.
2. Fort Worth Zoo. Wortham World of Primates has an extensive collection of Lemurs, Old World and New World Monkeys as well as Simangs and Orang-utans. Also more primates in the Natural Wonders exhibit including Lorises and Tamarins.
Runner up - Fort Worth Zoo

#2 Should read Houston Zoo.

When you go to GPZ, could you try and make a list of the primates on exhibit? I found an old list and it had some species I hadn't seen before or in a long time and I'm curious what they still have. I believe they have quite a few gibbon species too, or at least they did a while ago.

Enjoy the Gladys Porter Zoo! When I was there, I found it to be one of the most beautiful zoos ever! I love how they use those natural resaca waterways to divide up the exhibits.
Gorgeous!

From what I have heard they have one of the best rare antelope collections in the USA?, they once even had Hunters antelopes

@Siamang - can do. I think they have a type of Gibbon that no one else has, or at least one that is very rare in zoos.

@ANyhuis - I do hope to enjoy it. I've been wanting to go there since I was a little kid.

@Mark - The rare antelopes are my main reason for going. They did have Hirola. Now have Jentink's Duiker and Buskbuck. Bushbuck aren't rare, just in zoos. No other zoo has either of these two antelopes anymore.

Africa Live II Opening at SA Zoo

Depending on your planned trip date, you might want to swing back by the San Antonio Zoo. They are previewing the new Africa Live II section on February 27th in a member's sneak peak event. I'm waiting for confirmation from their PR department, but I think they plan to open the exhibit to the general public during Spring Break in mid-March.

Can you ask re their Galapagos giant tortoises breeding programme (they hold pure and breeding microphyes? What subspecies and what breeding plans exist et cetera? :D

I will probably put off San Antonio for this one. I still have a bad taste in my mouth after my last trip. Although Africa Live looks promising.
