Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust Jersey Zoo Update 2011

A few notes from this mornings visit:

The park was fairly busy, with plenty of tourists coming in. The new system is much better at the entrance, and the new cafe is SO much better than the other one (Dodo Cafe).

Two Ring-Tailed Lemurs have been born in the Kirindy Forest exhibit.

Madagascan Crested Ibis have made a nest.

Northern Bald Ibis have been temporarily moved. (Does anybody know why?)

All three tortoise species are back outside (Radiated, Galapagos Giant, and Marginated)

The new fruit bat enclosure was open. The public viewing area is really quite good, though there is a need for more plants and ropes for the bats in the enclosure itself.

Finally, work was still being done on the old part of the visitors centre. Not sure what it will be though...

I did not get the chance to have a look, as i was in a bit of a rush as am going to UK tomorrow. Will be visiting Cotswold and Dudley whilst there.

More ropes in the bat enclosure...? Why? The plants are growing...
No porcupines anymore I'm afraid.
New visitors centre looks really good, think the old half is going to be the admission side, with the new bit being cafe and shop (admissions desk in there looks temporary)

I think there should be more ropes near to the front of the tunnel, so that visitors can get a better look at them as they were all right at the back yesterday. :)

Alexpe is reporting on actuzoo that "Ya Kwanza" will be moving to Vallee des singes in France, to start a new bachelor group with 4 young males from the nursery in Stuttgart.
With a new male " Badongo" a male at Romagne, becoming the dominant male at Jersey.

I have heard the same too. I think its possible that after an operation for testicular cancer(and removal of one of them) a few years back, that he may be infertile and no longer able to breed. He has only ever bred with one female in their group anyway.

Vallee de Singes and Romagne are the same place, so it will be a male swap, though into different roles.

I believe more zoos keeping Gorillas are being asked to house a breeding group and a bachelor group if they have the room or more than one group. The current males(2 not 4?) in the Stuttgart nursery are still very young though, so not sure about the authenticity of that part, but there are older young males in other European groups, including 2 in Stuttgart's breeding group and 3 others in Romagne's breeding group, any of which might be involved in the new male set-up there.

I have this info of Romagne's Curator ... He speak me of 4 young males of Stuttgart so it's possible : 2 of the nursery and 2 of the breeding group ...
In 2012, "Ya Kwanza" and the 4 young will move to Amnéville Zoo.

I guess these are the four younger males from Stuttgart then;

Lengai (Kibo x Kolo) mother-raised in group. born 2003.
Meru (Kibo x Mimi) mother-raised in group. born 2004.

Monza. born La Palmyre 2007(Bongo x Ybana) now in Stuttgart nursery.
Upala. born Heidleberg 2008 (Bobo x Chuma) now in Stuttgart nursery.

The two nursery ones are currently only 4 & 3 years old.

By deduction, I assume you meant this observation to be about Ya Kwanza?

Yes, that's correct. If this is the case its quite a similar situation to Jitu, the previous male at Blackpool, who was found to have been infertile (i think for the same reason) and was sent off to Valencia to head an all male group.
