Hello there. Just a quick update and a bit of insider gossip.

Remember when we had 'Team Building With Bite' come to make the fantastic climbing structures for our group of rescued barbary macaques that have challenging physical and emotional complications? They did a fantastic job, and all within only 5 days!

Well they're back next week, starting on an exciting 4 week project which is going to be huge for the park! I obviously can't say anything more than that at the moment, but they're definitely worth following on social media for updates both on this build and all the other great work they do for zoos up and down the country.;)

Another guessing game for a new species?

Nice little snippet of drone footage of one side of our barbary macaque project. This was filmed by Team Building With BITE, so it features the climbing frame they made for our group that has additional needs. I hope the link works....it was just taken off facebook. They filmed it whilst working on their new secret project which is just next door;), and it features Adao at the end.

Well I havent seen shipping containers be used in animal enclosure before so I guess they must be unique to me
Incidentally, one example of the use of recycled shipping containers: in his book The Stationary Ark, Gerald Durrell recounts that the den of Jersey Zoo's African civets (which bred very succesfully) was an old wooden shipping crate.

Jersey had plans (5-8 years ago) to use shipping containers as a frame & base for a new or extended Gorilla house.

You might have visited one or two without realising it though. Hamerton obviously make good use of them and I have wondered if they've been used elsewhere; Newquay perhaps?

Great footage. Nice to see a bit of recycling/upcycling of the Macaques home with the old shipping containers, unique but practical

Cheers, I'm really pleased that you like it. From design to now, it's been a long haul to get it done. The containers were kindly donated by MSC, and despite a couple of small technical teething troubles which have now been ironed out, they've worked out really well. We just need to get the electric fencing up in the other side of it now (what we call the woodland paddock), and then we can welcome Wahid's group.

As I've eluded to before, the barbary macaques (which have thus far been offshow to the public due there being no pathways) are just a part of the massive new development that we've been working hard on ready for reopening on April 12th. I can't wait for everyone to see it!:D

@Andrew Swales is there a problem with that?
No - no problem for me at all, as it makes no difference to me personally one way or the other.
If by 'unique', you meant 'unique' then nope - as I know of at least 3 zoos which have been using them for decades, so presumably that could be a 'problem' for someone.
If by 'unique' you meant just that you personally hadn't noticed, then I suppose not.

Sorry, I should have said 3 UK zoos...

So we've learnt that shipping containers are quite common across different zoo's. It's a nice touch imo for Jimmy's Farm.

Thanks. As a smallish park, we really can’t afford to throw things away....you wouldn’t believe what kind of hoarders we are!:D So using containers really fits in with our repurpose, reuse, recycle ethos. We have bizarre piles of materials all over the place. Our general manager even has a box in the tool room marked "......'s box of random s***", the contents of which are a bloody mystery to me!!!

Where have we learnt that their use is 'quite common' from...?
I don't actually think they are used that often.
Many smaller or more heavily developed zoos would find them difficult or even impossible to install, as although not especially heavy, they are cumbersome to move, needing a sizeable crane or a couple of large telehandlers.
