Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park Jimmy's Farm News 2021

Yeah there are 6 stables and 4 yards in the building, with about 4 acres of paddocks attached, so there’s plenty to come! Though we’re definitely aware that we don’t want to overstock it....better that fewer animals have more space to spread out in.
Brilliant. as far as know I have seen zebras been mixing with other animals at different collections like the giraffes, ostriches, oryx and many more

Pretty sure you can tick giraffes of the list bit short on head room :)

Yeah we aren’t quite ready for giraffes yet. But the build was made with the intention of attaching another house and perimeter extension that would be capable of housing larger animals. If that were giraffe or something else, then who knows? Imagine what that would look like on the London-Ipswich train passing by giraffe!!!:D

Go for the classic mix of Ostrich, Eland or Lechwe with your Zebra...., or, Black Wildebeest & Red Hartebeest with Ground Hornbill & Crowned Cranes? You gotta aim high right?

Very true indeed. Extending the wildlife park is awesome and the zebras are amazing

Zebras can (and will!) attack (and kill?) pretty much anything housed with them.
Advising housing them with wing-clipped birds is irresponsible.

Not sure I said we were going to put birds with them. But cheers:)

These 2 came from Lake District Wildlife Park. The others are coming from 2 more southern locations. Don't wanna jinx it by saying where from at this stage...I hope you understand as any transfer can be a tricky business. All males...we agreed to hold a non-breeding group for now .
Thankyou. Quite understand the privacy requirement.

I didnt say that you had said you were going to put birds in with them
I replied to TriUK's suggestion that you housed them with Ground Hornbills and Cranes.
The comment can be seen in shaded italics above my reply.

Good advice from someone who knows way more than me. I did see this mix once a long time ago in N America, I think it was either in Detroit or Chicago. But, I think there were exhibits ‘within’ exhibits so that the birds had sanctuary away from the larger ungulates. Sorry if my suggestion of a fantastical diorama offended - it’s not often a collection has a ‘blank canvas’ mixed exhibit to work with.

Let’s hope not. Keeping flight restricted cranes with hoofstock often results in high crane mortality and poor breeding results. It’s effectively treating the cranes as disposable wallpaper. Black Wildebeest, while totally wonderful animals, are particularly apt to flatten cranes.
Just noticed this has all been covered above. My bad. Zebras will of course hunt and kill infant hoofstock.

This morning I re-checked where I had seen Crowned Cranes being kept with Zebra and other stock and it was Colchester (I think I'm right here?), San Diego WAP in a massive exhibit, but also in Bahrain. I have seen Ground Hornbill in with Zebra but mostly its large Stork species. It may be controversial and out of date to do so now. I found a few random google images (attached) too.

Wing-clipped vultures too.
No-one was questioning IF it had been done, and I have seen many examples in the past including major European Zoos, and there will be plenty of pictures out there.
Zebras (or any of the other mammals mentioned) will certainly not differentiate between cranes and Marabous. When Crowned Cranes could be obtained in bulk from the wild (for around £40 each in the UK) it was often done. As described above, the birds were effectively used as 'wallpaper' as the scene they helped set was more important than any of its components.
You could also have posted pictures of chimps tea-parties, elephant rides, or other spectacles done in the past?

Really good point. I’m glad zoo husbandry, focussed conservation and welfare trump how good an exhibit looks.
