Johnsons of Old Hurst Johnsons of oldhurst

Had a good couple hours or so at Johnson's of Old Hurst today, first visit in over 2 years.
  • It was nice to see the group of about 4 Racoon Dogs in a wooded area to the other side of the bears than the tropical house, an interesting species that I have not seen before, however looking at ZTL they seem fairly common.
  • I Got a decent view of one of the Sloth Bears who made a few appearances in the are to the right of the door, walking, digging and looking around.
  • One of the Puma sisters was very active and showy, a contrast to last visit where I didn't manage to see either despite looking for a bit. One of the Leopard Cats was also visible this time.
  • It was cool to see the new pair of Lions in their decent enclosure.
  • The tropical house has (unsurprisingly in some ways) developed and grown significantly since my last visit, it is quite a sight, especially with the sheer number of individual crocodiles ad well as species on show. The Cichlid to the entrance end of the building was also good to see.

Visited Johnson's of Oldhurst for a couple of hours today in the torrential rain.

The last time I was there the nursery had a large collection of crocodiles etc and I thought that impressive. This time the saltwater crocodile area in the tropical house had more crocs in it than I've seen in one place, all sizes and big numbers. Bit of a wow.

There were a couple of turacos in the tropical house sharing an enclosure with a dwarf croc, two green iguanas and a turtle. Interesting mix. One turaco was violet and the other white cheeked but only the white cheeked was signed.

Both pumas were showy, which was a nice surprise. The female lion was right at the window of the house, eyeing up a visitor's dog for snack size and offering excellent views of her up close.

The enclosure that it was mentioned had lynx in it next to the pumas and near the lions had an upgrade since my last visit with a new tunnel area and entrance (pictured). There was food in it but didn't see any occupants and there was no signage. Not sure what is in it.

A couple bobcats!

A couple bobcats!

That's nice, one of only a couple of places with them, they aren't easy to see so that's something to look forward to. It's not the highest enclosure which is why I was thinking it wasn't for cats, but it has furniture for climbing etc.

Does anyone have a updated animal list for the reptile house? Especially if the zoo still houses Nile Monitors, there is a picture of them on the website but they are absent from ZTL. Any help would be much appreciated

Has anyone seen the bobcats recently? I noticed theyre not listed on zootierliste anymore and wondered if the collection still held the species?
