Jurug Zoo. Solo

I sense the lack of underwater viewing disturbing...
This is the umpteenth Indonesian crocodile exhibit without an underwater view!
Well.. except for Predator Fun Park!

Solo's mayor has just uploaded a series of plans for phase 2 of Solo Safari's development, including enclosure designs for Bengal Tigers, Crocodiles, a revamped/extra otter exhibit, several amusement park tripe (that will doubtless eat away at Solo Safari's already limited space), and most interestingly an enclosure labelled for Bobcat(s).

If we went with this image from the mayor's Twitter account, this "bobcat" might not be the real thing.

There's also some more interesting new stuffs for Phase Two, including one that might be a Bird and Reptile House (Brookfield Zoo's Feathers and Scales is what I could think of). Weirdly, there's apparently going to be a crab-eating macaque exhibit, I just hope that it have a underwater view like the one in River Wonders. I'm guessing the "African Village" to be something like the African Village at Batu Secret Zoo or just a random dioarama for photoshoots.

I had a feeling this might happen. Leopard cats (Prionailurus javanicus) were a part of Jurug's collection before the revitalization. I'm honestly not that bummed to have them around instead of bobcats as Solo's climate is far too hot for them anyway, and it's nice to see some representation for native small mammals. Here's hoping Sunda Porcupines and other smaller mammals make a return as well.

The Camel Trail's location is unchanged from the previous Dromedary Camel exhibit which also featured a trail for visitors to ride them. I was wondering why they kept that part of the zoo unrenovated.

I'm somewhat worried for the "Night Safari", here's hoping it doesn't take notes from Surabaya Zoo's night safari (which looks more like a "Night Circus" if you ask me complete with bright neon lights and loud music).

Still missing from the layout are the Javan Lutung, which had a prominent sponsored exhibit before the revitalization.

Doesn't this place have capybara before the revitalization? I wonder what happen to it.

I'm curious if they're going to continue their turtle/tortoise complex plan from before the brand changing and revitalization.
Jurug Solo Zoo has also planned to build new exhibits for turtles and tortoises.

That's true, it was a pretty large individual as well. Not sure what happened to it.

I'm sure they'll have some way of showcasing them, having the mayor's old tortoises would invite such positive news coverage. They also had a number of Red-eared Sliders, Amboina Box Turtles and a pair of Manouria emys (their mating grunts haunt me to this very day :)), I wonder if they'll also make a return.

Apparently, they only had one capybara with some ducks. I'm guessing that it might be exchanged with Taman Safari Bogor for their animals. Though I'm definitely interested in the zoo having capybara again, now in a much better exhibit (And I'm not talking like the one in Gembira Loka)

This new post suggests that the African Spurred tortoises previously donated by the town's mayor are now displayed at the petting zoo.

It's unfortunately quite a small space considering how many tortoises (at least 8) were donated. Not sure if they will get revitalized enclosures anytime soon.

Wow that’s really interesting to me since bobcat’s are one of my favorite cats that live in my neck of the woods and I like them because when I was younger I was in Boy Scouts but I am an Eagle Scout and um you see when I was in Boy Scouts we would go to a lot of summer camps and one of them had a little zoo not far away like it’s a long hike to get to it and the zoo only had 3 animals that I can remember but these animals I believe were rescues and the zoo had only native animals like black bear, White tailed deer and bobcats and I remember one time I was with my friends and I spotted a tiny face in the corner of the bobcat enclosure and my friends didn’t see the face at first but then they eventually saw it and the little face that I saw was a baby Bobcat and I hope that those of you who live in Indonesia get to experience the bobcat which is a big part of the folklore in North America like the European descended inhabitants admired the cat for its ferocity and grace and in the United States the bobcat rests prominently in the anthology of national folklore and who knows maybe you might fall in love with bobcats the same way that I did.

These tortoise enclosure design are quite common in Indonesian zoos and captivity in general, so I feel like there's probably won't be any proper upgrades unfortunately.

Solo Safari recently announced that they will open the second phase of their zoo on 20th of December this year, in time before Christmas break. Among the important attractions are enclosures for the 3 tigers they will house, one is confirmed to be a Bengal tiger, and the rest I presume to be Sumatran. There will also be an area where visitors can feed the tigers, not unlike other Indonesian zoos.

The other big enclosure reported to be open this December is the large dome aviary. Other attractions that will also be available include Camel rides, a zip line ride that goes over the African Savannah habitat (this one is already available) and a floating restaurant with habitats for Pelicans and Black Swan.

It's unclear whether this means Solo Safari is getting a dedicated Pelican habitat, as the zoo already has 2 free-roaming Australian Pelicans (named Pedro and Mona Lisa), or if we are also getting free roaming Black Swans.

It's also unclear whether other parts of the zoo will be open at this time, including the crocodile habitat and the enclosure for the "bobcats".

I sure do hope the crocodile exhibits are done by that time, because I really wanna go to Solo Safari one day, and I can't go there if it's not complete yet

In more exciting/baffling news, Solo Safari "confirms" that they now house a Serval and an American Bobcat, and that these animals along with the tigers are already on display in Solo Safari (as confirmed by their reply to comments).

Solo Safari on Instagram: "Halo sahabat satwa.

A part of me hopes that they've housed an actual American Bobcat, though it's more likely to be a fumble from the zoo's social media team. I'm unfortunately unable to confirm this until early next year when I plan to visit.

Just went the zoo yesterday, I'll list some changes that have been made from my last visit:

> There are now free-roaming Helmeted Guineafowl and at least 2 Javan Peafowl
> The semi-indoor viewing area for Komodo Dragons now houses a few reptile species in rather horrible enclosures, barebones wooden boxes with glass lid and sides. Here are its inhabitants:
- 1 sub-adult green Iguana
- 4 baby Sulcata tortoises
- 3 baby Sulcata tortoises
- 1 cornsnake
- 1 reticulated python
The enclosures were too small and had very shallow water bowls that were often soiled by feces. Some of the worst enclosures I've ever seen for reptiles in a zoo. My guess is that these were animals surrendered over to the zoo and they did not have time, or more likely effort, to create better enclosures for them.
> The Asian Panorama section of the zoo still has the same odd combination of livestock (including 2 cassowaries and a pair of Javan Banteng), but some parts are now periodically sectioned off to allow the grass to recover from grazing. Same goes for the Agile Wallaby exhibit.
> A new glass exhibit has been made at the entrance of the Primate Islands which houses 3 Javan Lutung. These are presumably the family that was once housed in Jurug.
> The old enclosure housing the dromedary camel has been renovated into an oval trackway for 1 Dromedary Camel and 2 Bactrian Camels that visitors can ride on or feed. The camels are on leashes.
> They have added more meerkats, I'm unsure of how many, but I saw at least 5, which is 2 more than the original.
> Beside the meerkat exhibit is now a glass enclosure housing 4 Asian Leopard Cats (Prionailurus sp.), these are most likely the "Bobcats" we were promised as there are no American Bobcats in the entire zoo and it lists them as such in the zoo map. Not a loss for me since the enclosure is decent and the cats were adorable (pictures soon)

> The islands also now have freeroaming ducks, specitically White Chinese Geese and Muscovy Ducks. That particular day, the sun was quite hot, so much so that both the Pelicans and the Cormorants were taking shade below foliage. So far no sign of the promised Black Swans, though it could just be that I missed them.
> Preceding the aviary are a number of enclosures showcasing hornbills and cockatoos:
- 2 Wreathed Hornbills
- 1 Rhinoceros Hornbill
- 1 Oriental Pied Hornbill
- 2 Tanimbar Corella
- 3 Sulfur Crested Cockatoos
- 1 Palm Cockatoo
The enclosures are decent, if not a bit empty, consisting of faux rock walls and a few long horizontal branches that extend throughout the length of the enclosure. They are kept clean, way more than the reptiles are, though I didn't see any hide boxes or enrichment besides a few coconuts nailed to the branches.

>The walk-through aviary is large, though again a bit barren. There is a waterfall in the middle of the exhibit and a ramp that takes you to a photo spot where you can take a picture with a few birds. The inhabitants are as follows:
- Black naped Orioles
- Javan Myna
- Black Winged Myna
- Indian Myna
- Sunda Collared Dove
- Oriental Magpie Robin
- Javan Peafowl
- Eclectus Parrots
- Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo (Photo spot)
- Blue and Yellow Macaws (Photo spot)
It's possible I might have missed some bird species, since many of them decided to perch on the aviary dome's support rather than in the few short trees present in the aviary. I also have to notr the 8 or so Javan Peafowl in the area, they will peck if you get too close.
It's strange that they did not add some sort of waterfowl, considering that they have a water feature. In fact, it feels as if the entire aviary is lacking some unique birdstock. It could just be that Solo Safari is not done introducing all the birds intended for the aviary, hence why the structure often isn't present in their social media posts despite being a large selling point when phase 2 was in development.

> Exiting the walk-through aviary, there are a few more enclosures with a similar style to those housing the cockatoos and hornbills. This area houses several birds of prey:
- 1 White-bellied sea eagle
- 2 Changeable hawk-eagles
- 5 Brahminy Kites
- 2 Crested Serpent Eagles
- 2 Javan Eagles
> The African Savannah has 2 new zebras and 2 new blue wildebeest, upping the count to 4 for each species. There is also a new zipline that takes you through the middle of the enclosure.
> Next up is the Tropical Jungle, which is a ramp that takes you above several semi aquatic enclosures and ending with the newly refurbished ASC otter enclosure which is twice as long as the previous one. The other enclosures include:
- 1 Pygmy Hippo (moved from the African Savannah)
- 1 Common Hippo (moved from its old enclosure)
- 1 Saltwater Crocodile
- 1 False Gharial
> The Tiger enclosure has its entire viewing gallery indoors. There's a cordoned section on the left where you can pay a fee to feed the tigers. The enclosure itself has a large waterfall in the back where the water flows to the swimming area right behind the glass. The enclosure houses 2 Bengal tigers.
> Beside the tiger exhibit is the serval exhibit, also located indoors. The enclosure is quite long and tall, though not very wide with a few perches that the serval can jump on. It houses a single serval.

And that's all for the animal enclosures (so far at least), though there doesn't seem to be any plans to add in new large enclosures besides a planned "night safari". Instead I feel like they will now focus on building the "amusement park" section of the zoo, such as the haunted house.

Solo Safari announces a new tiger cub will soon be on display during the zoo's lebaran season.
It's weird that they have not confirmed whether this tiger is a birth from one of the new resident tigers or whether it was transported from another facility.

I'm quite concerned if this tiger cub will be used for photos with guests, a controversial practice I believe the Safari group has (correctly, imo) phased out. Surely they wouldn't do this after the drama involving Almad Alshad's own tiger cub a while ago, but we will see.

Solo Safari on Instagram: " Sneak Peek Alert! Siapa yang bisa menolak mata besar yang penuh rasa penasaran ini? Sebuah keajaiban kecil sedang menunggu untuk bertemu dengan kalian di Solo Safari! ✨ Stay tune! karena petualangan baru akan segera dimulai. #SoloSafari #SneakPeek #tamansafariindonesia #lebaran2024"

Visited the zoo again today, and I now have some more information regarding the tigers. Hasna, one of the female Bengal Tigers, has been and still is off display now following the birth of three tiger cubs two months ago. The three cubs are suspected to be all male.

The three cubs were on temporary display today, as in a zookeeper sets up a fenced area in the grass and allows visitors to see them, but not touch. I'm not sure how many times a day this is done and for how long as I had to leave the zoo quickly due to the rain.

Here is an image of the cubs:
