Today one of the best chapters in the National zoos history has sadly come to an end. Kandula the zoos soon to be 14 year old Asian Elephant, has started his journey to the Oklahoma city zoo where both zoos and the AZA are hoping he can breed their and have some kids of his own.
Kandula was born at the zoo on November 25, 2001. His mother is Shanti the youngest of the three females the zoo had at the time.
Kandula will be missed but he has a bright future and hopefully one day he'll be a dad.

I know Nisha posted this above but this is the zoos statement and some writing from me.

Goodbye, Kandula!
Today, Asian elephant Kandula departed for his new home at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden.
A team of keepers and veterinarians are traveling with Kandula. En route, they will observe him via live video monitors and will stop frequently to care for his needs. We will let you know when Kandula has safely arrived.
Although it’s bittersweet to say goodbye, male elephants become increasingly independent as they mature. At 14, it’s time for him to separate and be with females he’s not related to. This move supports his natural development and his genes will contribute to the genetic diversity within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Asian Elephant population.
