Most zoos which keep Kangaroos and wallabies normaly have 1 or 2 species, Zoo Maubeuge has - if we should belief Zootierliste 5 :
Red-necked wallaby Macropus rufogriseus
Tasmanian Red-necked wallaby Macropus rufogriseus fruticus ( syn. bennetti )
Eastern Grey giant kangaroo Macropus giganteus
Red giant kangaroo Macropus rufus
Black-faced kangaroo Macropus fuliginosus melonops
On June 30 this year I visited this zoo for the first time and because I never have seen Black-faced kangaroos knowingly, I of course wanted to see this species.
I'm not a Kangaroo-expert and the Kangaroos I found in the single Kangaroo-enclosure all looked somehow the same. I've placed some pictures in the Zoo Maubeuge Gallery so hope someone can help me.
In the same enclosure also the Wallabies are kept and with these the same, for me they all looked the same ! Some Wallabies were seperated in a small enclosure in the larger enclosure so maybe these were of the other subspecies ? By the way, what is the difference between the "normal" and the Tasmanian Red-necked wallabies ? From the Wallabies also photos can be found in the Zoo Maubeuge Gallery.
Hope someone can help....

Most of the kangaroo photos look like eastern greys to me, although I think Hix may be on the money about the hybrid. Telling the difference between red-neck subspecies is very difficult, with the main differences being the Tassie ss being somewhat smaller and furrier. A question I would ask is how strictly have the ss been kept apart in Europe to date? I suspect there could have been a lot of hybridisation between the ss over the years.

Looked like pitiful conditions for a kangaroo, or are the enclosures more extensive with more vegetation than the photos indicate?
