On May 22nd, the zoo announced that (2.0.1) scimitar-horned oryxes named Goose, Kevin, and Sedona were born.

We are excited to announce that a critically endangered male Bornean orangutan was born on Monday, May 8, to mother Josie. Both mom and son appear healthy and are doing well! Josie and her baby are currently behind the scenes while they form that critical bond. Orangutan infants have long-lasting relationships with their mothers, so Josie will spend the next several years showing the new baby vital orangutan skills like how to build nests, where to find food, how to interact with others, and how to use tools to forage. The Bornean orangutan is a species native to the island of Borneo and is classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List primarily due to deforestation. The Kansas City Zoo formed the CREATE Project in partnership with APE Malaysia, which is aimed at long-term habitat restoration in the Kinabatangan rainforest of Borneo. On May 23rd, the zoo announced its name, Nanas.

A female Masai giraffe has arrived!

1-year old “Alika” has been transferred to Kansas City from the Franklin Park Zoo. She joins the zoo’s 1.3 other Masai giraffes and has a breeding recommendation with the male, “Aidan”.

Kansas City Zoo on Instagram: "Happy #WorldGiraffeDay! To kick off this conservation holiday, we first want to introduce a special new resident to the Zoo: Alika! This Masai giraffe recently transferred from the Franklin Park Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s (AZA) Species Survival Plan. Alika will be turning 2 in September and is almost as tall as 4-year-old Chandy! This growing girl has already met Mahali (who will be 29 in July!) and Chandy, and in the next week she will also be introduced to Makali and Aidan, our other new giraffe resident! While Alika is not viewable to visitors yet, we will be sure to update you on social media when she makes her public debut! All of our amazing giraffes are ambassadors for their wild counterparts, who are unfortunately facing a “silent extinction.” Giraffe populations have decreased by 30 percent in the past 35 years. The Masai giraffe, which is the species you’ll find at the Zoo, is now listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to threats such as habitat loss and poaching. The AZA community is working with conservation partners to help ensure a future for wild giraffes. On June 9th, the zoo announced the names of the goats born in mid-May, Coconut and Lylla.

On June 16th, the zoo announced that they acquired a (0.1) bat-eared fox named Jane from The Living Desert in California, and is now on exhibit.

On June 22nd, the zoo announced that they bred 6,521 Wyoming toad tadpoles, of which all but 30 were released into the wild.

On June 29th, the zoo announced that (0.0.2) more scimitar-horned oryxes named Athena and Godric were born in May which are now on exhibit.

On June 30th, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (0.1) Matchie's tree kangaroo named Popondetta to Zoo Miami in Florida.

On July 5th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) common chimpanzee named Dafina passed away at age 24 due to a decline in health caused by secondary renal failure and an inoperable reproductive tract tumor.

Kansas City Zoo announces name change, embracing future aquarium

Personally, I disliked the old logo so this is a nice refresh, even if it is simple. The Aquarium is due to open Labor Day weekend.

I like the new logo and the zoo is showing its commitment to elephants by including an icon of of one as part of the 5 species here:
