Kaunas & Tallinn Zoo

Photos of Kaunas and Tallinn Zoo now uploaded to Gallery.

-Kaunas zoo: only zoo in Lithuania. Some rare and interesting species/specimens (Mountain Weasel, dhole, Musk ox, Bush dog, a golden Tufted capuchin monkey...), yet most exhibits (notable exceptions: maned wolf & musk ox) subpar and dated due to lack of financial support.

-Kaunas Zoological Museum: appealing collection with some nice displays. In particular some of the deer mounts (Siberian roe deer, white-tailed deer, axis deer...) are masterly manufactured.

-Tallinn zoo: large zoo with great potential for the future. Next to San Diego and Berlin Tierpark, as well as some private collections in the Middle East, probably biggest breeder of a large variety of caprinae species (like Blue sheep, both tur species, urials, gorals etc.) and Europe's most successful breeder of Striped hyenas (at the moment about 20 specimens kept in the zoo). Intensely involved in the ex- and in-situ protection of the European mink (currently ~ 400 specimens in the zoo's breeding stations with release sides on two Estonian islands). Antiquated exhibits for carnivores etc. currently in the progress of being demolished and replaced by modern exhibits. Maybe soon acquiring black rhinos and saiga antelopes. All in all very interesting collection (said various caprinae species, gaur, regularily breeding Steller's sea eagles/Siberian cranes, Greenland musk ox...) in pleasant woodland scenery.

Definitely worth a visit, especially in connection with a visit to the beautiful historic city center.

Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions regarding these institutions. Hopefully, I can answer them satisfactorily ;).

Thank you for this information, it's always good to hear about less well known/discussed collections.

Do you have any more information about the potential saiga for Tallinn?

You're welcome.

Regarding saigas for Tallinn: a new enclosure is currently built, but we'll see if saigas will live in it.

Thank you for your report and pics from these out of the way collections.
Would you have a full list of the caprinae species at Tallin?

Take a look at the list I posted at the "Hoofstock collection"thread. Zootierliste is pretty accurate here.

It's a real shame that Tallinn Zoo is not more often mentioned here. I can only repeat that it is a really nice zoo and absolutely worth a visit.
