Khao Kheow Forest & Wildlife Reserve Park Khao Kheow Open Zoo news

Hi,
I'm planing on a trip to Thailand in July and would like to ask anyone, if the following species are being kept in zoo..Fea's Muntjac,
Asiatic Brush-tailed Porcupine, Indochinese Serow, Flat-headed Cat,
Burma Banteng, Banded Linsang, Large Indian Civet, Eld's Deer, Asiatic
Brush-tailed Porcupine and Chinese Serow?
Thanks in advance,
Jakub

As of my latest visit (June 2024), I saw Indochinese serow, Burma banteng (lots of them), Large Indian civet (not sure if it wasn't asian palm) and a nice free-ranging herd of Thai Eld's deer. I saw a flat-headed cat in Khao kheow when I visited the zoo back in 2019 :p. Unfortunately they weren't around this time. There's a chance that I missed the Asiatic brush-tailed porcupines. Try looking for them in Forest of Asia.

I uploaded approximately 220 photos of Khao Kheow Open Zoo from my visit with @twilighter on August 4th. We hired a driver and he picked us up in Bangkok super early and we were at KK Zoo for its 8:00 a.m. opening time. It's a fantastic zoo and one needs to rent a golf cart in order to get around as the place is massive. We saw everything in 5 hours with zero breaks for eating, but one could really spend longer in the Bird Aviary and repeat some zones if they wished.

Afterwards, our driver took us 45 minutes south where we toured a trio of smaller zoological attractions until just after 6:00 pm. Pattaya Crocodile Farm (ghastly, avoid!), Underwater World Pattaya (okay but small and currently undergoing some renovations) and Monsters Aquarium (jammed with rarities). We battled traffic and got back to Bangkok at close to 9:00 pm and it was an extremely long day.

At the end of our 23-day, 59-zoo trip, @twilighter had an extra day alone in Bangkok and he actually went to KK Zoo for a second visit!

It's fun to see people online go so nuts for Moo Deng. I saw a baby pygmy hippo at another zoo years ago and was blown away by how much it looked like a little cartoon creature.

The female baby, which was named "Bouncy Pork", has apparently also become an internet meme.
What I find most of excitement is that this is a female; I recall it was that for whatever reason pygmy hippos bred in captivity historically had male slant

I thought the problem was the other way around with females being the dominant sex.

And uh, wow, Moo Deng has blown up more than I'd have ever expected. The global meme animal phenomenon we get once every couple years.

Globally, there is a skewed effect favoring females over males in pygmy hippo. It has not yet been determined what is the root cause for this phenomenon.

It would be beneficial that Thai zoos and beyond in SEAZA exchange pygmy hippos more regularly. The breeding success with the species is generally quite good in the region. It all requires more regular exchanges to introduce new genes in each country zoo population. Hopefully, soon SEAZA will also integrate pygmy hippo into a regional ex situ conservation program.

@Zz123, Thank you for your clarification.

In all the frequent moves here to other Thai zoos you can see how forward thinking the Zoological Parks Organisation is in the country and how embedded ex situ conservation breeding and the importance of frequent animal exchanges to reinforce bloodlines are.

After they lost their last female gaur, they tried to find a new one, but there were none left in any zoo in Thailand. It's quite funny because in Thailand, wild gaurs aren’t that rare, but the Department of Forestry doesn’t allow female gaurs to be given to zoos. As a result, they had to request gaurs from Malaysia. After the Taiping Zoo gave female gaurs to Khao Kheow Zoo, they received new female gaurs from the Malaysian Department of Forestry.

I'm not sure if it will be a purebred hubbacki or not

They are true hubbacki?

I found this interesting linkage to Malaysian ex situ conservation breeding for gaur by Perhilitan.

Very interesting read! Thanks for sharing.

According to the kurator, the male at Khao Kheow is a purebred hubbaki. They indeed tried to find female in Thailand, but without success.

The hubbaki groups in Negara and Melaka also disappeared and this is transfer is very positive signal.
