Killer Whales Trapped Under Ice

Killer Whales in Hudson Bay have been trapped in by the frozen waters. They are currently seen coming up for air in a small opening. Hopefully this gets enough attention where something is done :(

The same thing happened a few years back, (before your time I'd say Jordan) that time it was grey whales, and it cost about $2million to try and free them I don't think any survived from memory.

However I do though recall thinking the money could have saved a lot of rain forest and it's animals .
 
Hmm... Was there a quick freeze? Is this the arctic equivalent of beaching re: following the leader, wrong navigation?
 
The wind shifted overnight and they escaped into open water. I'm sure this sort of incident has happened before; I wonder if they can detect weak points in the pack and break new breathing holes in some conditions.
