Kloss Gibbons?

Does anyone know if there are any in the UK?

If not then could you please say even if the zoo is abroad.

I think there used to be some at Twycross.

Thanks:D

Twycross used to have one, she died in 2006 I think. I don't know of any in captivity at the moment.

I don't think there are any outside Indonesia. The Ragunan Zoo, Jakarta (Java) has them.

Basel used to have a group of (about) 4 Kloss' Gibbon in the late 196O's/70's. I believe Twycross's single male may have been the last one of that group.

No Twycross Kloss Gibbon used to be a pet in the U.S.A,until he was re-homed by his owner at Twycross.

which sort of begs the question, are there likely to be any in private hands in the US? Perhaps elderly ones.

Not that I know of,but I could be wrong,I know for a fact that they have only ever had the 1 in the nearly 20 yeats I have been going.

At the same time Perth Zoo had a female, but due to the stubborn attitudes of both zoo managers at the time, neither would lend the other animal to make a pair. Both zoos had impressive gibbon collections and the Kloss was a bonus. Perth's female died circa late 80s, I think.

I have read that there are more Kloss in captivity now, presumably the aforementioned individuals in Indonesian zoos. Surprised Aspinall didn't try for some of them.

I am afraid that Twycross's Kloss's gibbon came from Switzerland. I know this as I have seen the Swiss lady in the enclosure many times in the past.
There is a book about the Kloss's gibbon called Bilou. It was one of six I believe that were taken to Switzerland. Brought it in the zoo shop a few years ago. Unfortunately it is not on sale anymore but there may be copies in second hand book shops.

Thanks for the correction,in that case what primate came from the USA then?

So I was correct in my original belief. The group of six(4?) that went to 'Switzerland' would have been the group at Basel Zoo.

It would appear so but I don`t think he was ever part of the group that was kept at Basel,I do know he was an ex-pet.

I'm sure I heard Twycross received the last Kloss/dwarf Gibbon from Basel. I would be interested to know now whether that's correct or not- possibly Twycross had more than one, from different sources?

Could it be that it`s an ex-pet who`s owner just happened to be live in Basel!
