Knowsley Safari Park Knowsley Safari Park 2020

I only found out about Quigley(Grevy zebra) off the WMSP facebook page. Not found any official announcement via Knowsley either on their FB or website.
Have to admit that Knowsley are horrendous at announcements and their blog hasn't been updated for months. Still waiting for the lions replacement but maybe Covid-19 has halted their plans.

It is a shame they don’t put more effort into communicating on developments in terms of the animals. People love the safari park for the animals and many like to get to know the names of the animals. I understand that the priority for the social media teams is to promote income generating events like Enchanted. There are clearly many passionate “animal people” working at the park and it wouldn’t take much to put together a monthly update in which you had keepers from each section sharing a paragraph or two update with a couple of pictures. Although the benefit to the marketing department may be less obvious than promoting events it will likely indirectly help put money through the till.

Great to see another Grevy zebra has arrived.

Contrary to my last post regarding updates Knowsley have updated their blog;

Biffo the sea lion has sadly died aged 25yrs. He passed away in his sleep in the early hours of 15th November. He did have "some age related health issues such as arthritis and sight issues". He will be sadly missed by all. Such sad news

Another visit to Knowsley yesterday. Didn’t catch sight of the Zebra, it appears they were inside the Antelope House. Really looking forward to seeing them out and about amongst the antelopes and Rhino. The Lions once again were very active, here is some video I captured >>

Sad news indeed, a real 'Knowsley Character', however we all know he had a good life and was loved. Feelings to his keepers.

Still not caught sight of the Zebra but another enjoyable day on Safari with the weather being extremely kind!

Not having any luck catching a glimpse of the Zebra. Has anyone had any updates as to when they are likely to go on show? The Rhinos and Lions continue to be extremely lively and it made for another great day out on Tuesday.

I was surprised to see a Tiger located over by the Lion House/old Tiger enclosure today. Any ideas why it would not be over at the new Tiger enclosure? As would be expected on a Sunny day during the school holidays the park was very busy today.

That is what I was hoping, I was trying to determine from my video if it was either Sinda or Bira. It certainly didn’t look any bigger than either of them.
I wondered if the tiger up at the enclosure was either Bira or Sinda. I wonder whether one of the sisters could have been deliberately moved out of the enclosure in order to improve the chances of a mating. I haven’t seen the two mixing in the same enclosure for a good few months, which I was only commenting to a friend who also visits regularly who had observed the same. The new enclosure has plenty of surplus capacity for additional tigers so this would seem a logical reason for why they are using facilities up at the Lion house.

Clearly Kuzma was unable to work his magic when on loan so I’m sure they have put plenty of thought in how to maximise the chances of a successful mating. It does appear from the videos that it was Bira last time that they introduced Bira to.

I wonder if this time they may attempt to try and introduce the male to Sinda. From a genetic perspective I can’t see any reason why it matters which of the two are used for the breeding programme.

I’d imagine such a decision on which of the two females to favour is based on the knowledge of the individual characteristics and behaviour of the individuals. From doing a little bit of research online it does seem that the females only enter oestrus and therefore in season for mating in winter so this would make perfect sense that they would be desperate to introduce a male now. It would be amazing in Knowsley ended up with some Tiger cubs in 2021.
