Knowsley's male Bactrian camel Dougie has left for Longleat Safari park and has been replaced with a male from the Yorkshire Wildlife Park called Storm.

Will hopefully be at Knowsley this weekend if anyone has questions that they need answering

I may even drive past you then Nisha. :)

There has been a Forest Buffalo born recently, although last weekend when I was there they where in the most furthest point away from the road that they could have been and we didn't get the opportunity to get a look at him/her, so keep an eye out this weekend.

The 3 baby rhino's are all doing very well and if the weather is warm at the weekend there is a chance one or two may be out for a romp about in their pen outside for a few hours.

confused now - the cubs are the two males born a few months ago? they don't have two more?

They actually have 3 more not 2 more. Still very small and not introduced to the pride directly. No idea what the sexes are, but there is definately 3 of them. I have seen them with their mother in the penned off section.

The two cubs (2:0) born a few months ago have grown quickly and are fully enjoying pride life and posing for photographs!

I am there this Saturday so will see if anyone is about to get info from, then I'm off to WMSP for the first time in a long time on Sunday.

Quick Update 24th April 2011

I had a quick bimble around Knowsley on Sunday (24th April) and thought I'd share a couple of observations:

The 3 younger cubs were out in the sun with another female - presumably their mother? - but only in the fenced off enclosure just to the right of the road as you go through the gate into the Lion Area (before you go over the electric matting on the road) the were very alert and mobile, one is decidedly smaller than the other 2 (not uncommon) but all looked bright eyed and alert from where I sat.

I spoke to a couple of the keepers about the 'new' zebra which are still being held in a separate paddock just as you exit the main park safari drive (half sand and half grassed) - I enquired as to whether they were intending to release them free into the park itself any time soon and they said that they would like them to breed first if possible, The Male (Flynn) is now 6 years old and in his prime - the two females are much younger but they are sexually mature and so breeding is very much a viable option.

It was also great to see all three of the recent Rhino calves out and about in the main park with their mothers and loving the freedom by the looks of it too - I've only ever seen then in their fenced off area up until now so having them in the main park makes for some great photos.

I STILL detest the funfair area - in fact I think the braking system on the pirate ship scares the bejesus out of the meerkats as they jump every time it makes a noise. I know it's a great money spinner but can't they put it somewhere else (like Walton or Gatecre if I had my choice!!) :D

Either way I think the park is looking healthy in it's anniversary year and the reciept of a Roan Antelope (only one??) signals a new addition to the collection for me. - Anyone know where it/they came from?

There were plenty of young hoofstock calves around in the park too - I saw Eland, Lechwe, Brow Antlered and Blackbuck - there may well be more!

I believe they hold an all male herd of 7 brow-antlered deer. Maybe it was a barasingha calf that you sighted?

Re; Roan

While at Marwell on Wednesday, Knowsley staff were there collecting Roan Antelope !! Knowsley did comfirm this on there face book page, not sure of number,s or sex ratio.

Roan antelope, this is a major departure for a UK safari park, so satisfying to see all the ENGLISH safari parks bringing in more unusual and rarer species.
Come on Blair Drummond, keep up.

Must say I was pleasantly surprised by their new website and the local conservation talks and raising cash from SRI et al. Collectionswise, there is room for improvement here too (no bison and camels with African savannah spp. please).

What type of zebra been roped in? Have they overcome the male over population in lechwe and some deer been overcome?

Strange how in newspaper communications the sex of one of their recently born rhinos has changed over from female to male .. ()?

The Zebras are Grants.

I don't know about Lechwe but the Brow- antlered deer are the surplus males from Chester's breeding group. It would be good if they could obtain females to start a 2nd breeding group as they certainly have far more space than Chester does.

The Rhino calves are definately 2 females and 1 male, but that's newspapers for you, I saw the piece in a local paper to my area and they got just about everything wrong.

I suppose we could all do away with some journos ... for want of accuracy in reporting.

I do agree KSP is getting better. Well pleased with the red squirrel and SRI activities and they have a large following and audience/attendance.
