Some sad news...

Ah bad news, will this allow Knowsley to acquire a pure-bred male [Or move out one of the females?]

That could be a good idea, Blackpool need a female Sinda/Bira is not related to the resident male [Zambar] their isn't any park's with available young males in the UK [Unless of course moving Igor or Malchek at Colchester and Howletts, but I can't see that happening] so the male would have to come from Europe.

Mooted for the Future

Heard recently that Knowsley is looking to increase it's species holding by bringing:

Hippos to the Park (on the safari drive but fenced off in a ponded area - not sure of the location so won't speculate)

Greater One Horned Rhino (or Asian Rhino - whatever you prefer)

and they will enlarge and extend the Raptor aviary part that Gauntlet populate too.

Further details as and when they surface

It's also been rumoured they were getting Spotted Hyena's over 7 years ago,and they still haven't arrived! It would be nice to see them add something different to the park,to improve it as it seems to be the safari park that time forgot,if you discount Blair Drummond which just have a unique charm all of its own.Given what West Mids,Longleat and Woburn have done over the last few years Knowsley does appear to have stagnated, over the period that the others have been expanding and improving.

Knowsley have confirmed that Kibo will arrive from Boras and Nissim will go the other way. Nissim is being dominated by the cows at Knowsley but should fare better with the younger females in Sweden. Likewise, Kibo should be big enough to take control at Knowsley.

Does this transfer took place already?

Nope the transfer hasn't took place, it was due to in September but because of the weather it didn't take place. It should happen in 2012, hopefully this mean's Knowsley will have a calf(s) in 2014/15.:)

To be fair to Knowsley they have started to change things around and add species in the past 2 years (since the ' dead animal photo incident'). Since this they have added Roan's, Blesboks and a male Cape Buffalo (just from the top of my head).
The main improvement in this period is the management of what was already actually their in my opinion, this includes sorting out the herds of the following species that where too dense in population and probably inbreeding too much, these are Blackbucks, Ankole, American Bison, Pere Davids Deer and Fallow Deer to name a few from the top of my head. Also within this period they have been very successful with breeding of White Rhino (again), Scimitar Oryx, Pere Davids, Chital, Nilgai (again to name a few).
Away from the Safari drive and to the 'Zooey area or walk around area' this has improved within the last two years also with the Giraffe outdoor area being re-floored and not just grass and soil, a much needed improvement, also the Elephants outdoor area have been altered with new flooring in areas, new features within (up-right logs similar to Chester’s). The children’s play farm is going to be replaced with a bird of prey display of some type - I see this as a step forward myself. I also believe that Warthogs will be on display soon, again in the zoo area rather than the Safari Drive.
With regards to Hippos, I would love to see them develop the Mizzy Lake (the lake that the little train drives around) into a Hippo area, it is a good size and space is available.
One of Knowsley's advantage's over other Safari's and Zoo's is that they do have more space to play with which is a massive advantage and seem in recent times to be using it more wisely than they did previously.

All in all I would say that they are developing and improving now and have been doing so for sometime, but I must agree it was probably left a bit stagnant for too long before these more recent events have taken place and maybe they did fall behind the likes of WMSP and Woburn, but it seems to be all going in the right direction for now.

Hyena's - maybe one day...:)

Mizzy Lake could be the place actually as the plan is to put them somewhere with a lake that's fenced off enough so they don't eat the public :O)

White Rhino, Cara (born October 2008) has gone or is going shortly to CERZA in Lisieux, France...

Hi Nisha,

Don't know where you got this info from, but Cara left Knowsley over (or just about 12 months ago) and went to Lille Zoo.

Whether she is moving from Lille to CERZA I don't know?

The info came from ActuZoo - Translated with Google

CERZA born October 8, 2008, our young female white rhinoceros was to leave the CERZA. the
white rhinos are part of a breeding program where all the European captive white rhinos in Europe are
listed in order to learn more about their genealogy. In this way, the exchanges between zoos permetten t
to link different families of animals to avoid inbreeding. These program s breeding
ment also allows to exchange farming techniques and implement research to improve the welfare
animals in captivity. CERZA, with its experience and demand the head of the breeding program of
white rhinos, decided to dispatch Keyah to maximize its chances of reproduction.
Studies in European zoos have raised the observation that the young females in re Stant
their group of birth and in the presence of their mothers do not breed! It seems that the presence of the mother
inhibits the reproduction of young female. Some research in the data led to the recognition that once the
link cut, reproduction was favored. Keyah is part for England in order to maximize its chances of
childbearing. The arrival of Cara (young female born in England Knowsley October 7, 2008) also aims to
confirm these observations.

If it is incorrect then I apoligise but it looked to be a quote that had been copied from CERZA's own site.. :o

You could actually be correct about CERZA, something else on my mind at the time went to Lille and I may be mistaken -apologies.

However I am certainly right about my timings being approximately 12 months ago and not now. :)
