Knowsley Safari Park Knowsley Safari Park News 2012

Visited the Park today (once I'd finally got over the Runcorn/Widnes Bridge - blooming weekend lane closures - grrr grrr) anyway, nothing sparkling to add just a bit of an update - I couldn't find the Lesser Kudu in the paddocks anywhere, Bison & Forest Buffalo both in fenced areas as the ground is quite boggy so they sometimes fence them off the main paddocks to help the grass recover. Rhino likewise were all in their house & feeding area. Confirmed 5 zebra - all still on the sandy paddock on the way out of the park just before the Elephants - saw the new Bull Elephant - ooo he's an impressive big chap :O)
Baby Eland was running around in the main paddock and a baby Bison was in with the adults in their fenced area.
Baboons were as delinquent as usual - spent a happy hour sat watching them at the fence as they collected bits of brake light cover, rubber trim and number plates :O)
The Lions were all asleep - no sign of the 3 new cubs out with the main pride yet - mum was mooching around the sleeping dens though so maybe they were staying out of the showers?
Yet again the Hunting Dogs were nowhere to be seen - I know they have 3 females (all ex Port lympne) but they are so elusive the public must just believe it's an empty enclosure!
Think that's it really.

Thank you for the report!
If you have a picture of the new bull elephant, I`d love to see it. Maybe you could upload it in the gallery?

Nice report Karoocheetah. Apparently the grass in the Hunting Dog enclosure is very long/tall thus meaning that unless there moving you won't have a chance of seeing them. Thanks for reporting the arrival of the Bull elephant, seems Zoochat got first whiff of the arrival before the public*.

* When I say before I do mean that the public aren't aware [Unless there very dedicated Animal nerds:D], to them it's just another huge Elephant.

A week ago yesterday, I saw two Hunting Dogs. They were, for the first time I've ever witnessed, sat by the fence posing, although there was what appeared to be some sprt of keeper for a day activity going on by the tigers, which could well have caused their curiosity...

Yes they do tend to respond to the keeper presence like most animals - ever the opportunist hey :) - the best views and shots I have of them recently was from a Wildarena photosafari at Knowsley when Olly the keeper called them across - great shots of them running as a wee pack (well there are only 3) and interacting - a bonus when you can stand right up to the fence and pop away with your camera too

I remember at least 6 or 7 at one stage as I have photos to prove it. That would have been 2010ish so either some died or moved on as Jordan says.

Just out of interest - excuse my lack of expertise - but is keeping a single-sex non-breeding group easier than one with spayed females?

Knowsley confirmed on their facebook page that Nissim is still at the park and has not yet left for Sweden, waiting for some test results.

Yes, I checked with them yesterday as I began to doubt myself once we got talking. In my paultry defence Nissim has grown somewhat in the last months and I didn't think it looked like him
