Knowsley Safari Park Knowsley Safari Park news 2022

I have been going here regularly for the pa's 10 years or so and am now a member but haven't seen the plains zebra on the drive since 2018 I thought they had moved on

They have been at knowsley for over 10 years now on the drive the grevy zebra though are in a drive past enclosure

They've always had plains zebras (grants zebras) on the drive

I was under the impression that all the Grants zebras had moved and replaced with the Grevys but I'm happy if the Grants are still there. There's enough space for both breeds

Yes I thought the same. Like you say plenty of space for the species with having 2 potential reserves they could go in

Yes i wish the grevys weren't in a drive past enclosure I would like them to make roam on the reserve like the ones in West midlands

So had a really great visit here today. As expected no plains zebra on the safari and the grevys zebra were still in the drive past pen. Longing for the day I go and see them in the larger reserves I just hope this happens.

Ostrich are back on safari so I'm guessing they were kept away because of bird flu. I also saw 3 roan antelope out in the reserve which is rare to see.

Bira the tiger and the wolves are still on safari.

Possibly the biggest news comes from the sea lions. One of the trainers was doing some cleaning in the outdoor pool and I had a conversation with her about the sea lions. She was saying how long that the boys had all been there for and that Biffo had been there for 26 years. I asked if they would get anymore sea lions because I began to fear that once these 3 boys had died they wouldn't get any more due to space. However she told me that there had been many arguments about the size of the outdoor pool so they had the planning permission and funding to extend the pool to make it longer so they could have more sea lions with more space available. But then covid struck. So they lost all the funds for the extention. She still seemed hopeful that the extension would still happen and she said to watch this space over the next few years

It would be great for these to get an extention because I believe this is the only thing which let's the safari park down.

Glad you have a great time when I first visited a few weeks ago it was my first visit since before the elephants left and to be honest the park feels empty without them cause I would spend hours watching them

@Pootle which deaths could have been prevented? What actually killed the Elephants who’s deaths you say may have been preventable

I was talking to a blonde girl at the giraffes at my last visit who apparently used to work with the elephants. She informed me that the elephants never intended to return at all and didn't know why it was advertised as temporary. She seemed very angry talking about the whole situation, especially as she told us about one dying within miles of leaving the place. When you search for this information, there is nothing to say about the young one dying, I don't know why this has been hidden..... alot of people loved this part of the zoo, it is very sad to see it go to waste

I've been visiting this place for a while, and since those poor zebras have arrived they've been stuck in that small fenced bit, speaking to a keeper in a car they said that's the plan for them for now. Why get an animal to keep it in a small pen, poor things

Can someone shed some light on where the bats have gone? We used to love going in that house, it was a small and quick walk through, but the lighting in their lit them up lovely for a great experience. I have asked someone on one of my visits and the response was its closed because of covid... few months later asked again and I was very sad to be told they were all euthanised at the beginning of covid. I'm confused with the difference of stories

Another great visit here today. Not too much to report. There was lots of gardening and maintenance going on today around the park. The lions were not allowed in the safari drive because the enclosure was having new posts put in and the grass was being cut. Bira is still at the park. One of the ostrich had made its way over the cattle grid and into the section in front of the rhino houses.
I saw a digger and a few vans at the top of the old elephant enclosure and there were a few different materials with railings around on the side so there could be some work starting on this area soon.

About time the enclosure received some attention. I wonder if the original plan will still go ahead (mixed African exhibit is; giraffes,Blesbok etc)

@Keelan the building works in the former Elephant Enclosure could point to Elephants returning. Belfast Zoo are moving their elderly Asian Cowes. Maybe Knowlesley are rehoming these. Knowlesley could be a great Elephant Sanctuary,Bachelor Group or even a Breeding Herd. I have a gut feeling the Belfast Cowes are coming.

Even though this isn't out of the realms of possibility it's more of a fantasy. Knowsley aren't exactly known in recent years for good surprises

@Embu when the last Elephants left for Beaval Zoo in France,Knowlesley said Elephants would return. It’s been longer than expected but it could still happen. Regarding the lack of good surprises there is always a first time.

I implore your enthusiasm and if you're dreams come true then I owe you but let's not get ahead of ourselves they could just be upgrading the enclosure to move yet ANOTHER species in from the drive through. We shall wait and see
