The Knoxville Zoo's reopening plan has been approved by the county. The exact date is not yet known, but the zoo is aiming for "middle of May" (which would be in the next 2 weeks): Zoo Knoxville hopes to reopen by mid-May with safety procedures in place

Chimpanzee Pregnancy Annoucement:

Zoo Knoxville chimp Jambo is expecting a baby!

Jambo, a 14-year-old member of the zoo’s chimpanzee troop, is pregnant with her first baby. She is expected to give birth in late December or early January.

She came to the zoo from the Maryland Zoo in 2018 on a breeding recommendation from the Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan to save chimps from extinction.

Because two of the zoo's male chimps, Ripley and Jimbo, have showed breeding behavior with Jambo, a DNA test will be done to determine who fathered the baby.

No, and I'm not sure why you'd think this? There is an SSP for Chimpanzees and multiple other zoos (North Carolina, Maryland, Detroit) have had offspring in the past year alone.

Because that's what I was told when I discussed the Bonobo SSP with someone I've never paid much attention to the US chimp population, though, so any births will have gone by under my nose.

There was a new red panda cub born June 16th, 2020 that is currently being hand raised because of a low birth weight and some complications with supplemental feeding and maternal behavior. The zoo is "cautiously optimistic".

First hatching of Blue crowned laughingthrush:

The critically endangered Blue crowned laughingthrush hatched July 16 and is the first to hatch at the zoo.

There are less than 200 remaining in the wild.

The tigers have recovered from COVID-19:

Zoo Knoxville spokesperson says three tigers diagnosed with COVID-19 last month are clear of the virus and our of quarantine.

Bashir, an 11-year-old male; Arya, a 6-year-old female; and Tanvir, an 11-year-old male were reported to be experiencing mild coughing, lethargy and decreased appetite in late October.

The zoo said animals were to be kept in quarantine until being symptom free for 72 hours with all tests returning negative, or until 14 days after a positive test result.

Slim, an 8-year-old Komodo dragon born in Memphis, arrived Friday at Zoo Knoxville.

He had been living at The Bronx Zoo in New York City until his return to the Volunteer State earlier this week.

The bright orange baby was born at the end of last month to parents Lucy and Walter. The new baby is only the second to be born in Knoxville since 2017.

The baby has not been named because caretakers have not yet been able to identify the langur’s sex.

They’re actually Silvered leaf langurs. The zoo just ran a post on Instagram about them. The zoo has two males (Walter and Opie) and three females (Lucy, Teagan and Melody).
