Zoo Knoxville Knoxville Zoo

2 African lion cubs (1 male and 1 female) were born to first-time parents Amara and Upepo via emergency Cesarean section on December 21. Sadly, 2 other cubs didn't survive.

Isn't this similar to what happened to Amara's sister Asha/Felicia at Santa Barbara? I guess it's some sort of genetic thing... hopefully these cubs will be reintroduced to Amara eventually like Pauline was to Felicia.

Asha/Felicia gave birth normally, but her daughter wasn't getting enough milk and became hypothermic and hypoglycemic as a result which necessitated the hospital care away from her mother and subsequent successful reunion. Hopefully Knoxville will continue to assess whether an introduction to mom will be possible once she recovers from her C section.

If I were to guess on which facility that Bashir will be moving to, in my opinion, it might as well be Jacksonville. I would imagine that ever since Jaya moved out of the zoo to Little Rock, it is possible that the zoo would want to bring another male to be a suitable breeding partner for Cinta (who already lives at the zoo), which I can see that being the case if all things go as planned.

A healthy female Chimp infant was born on Friday, April 22nd to 37-year old mom Binti. Binti experienced birth complications that required medical attention after the birth so her daughter is currently being hand-raised by the keepers. The plan is to reintroduce mom and baby as soon as Binti recovers and is ready to nurse and care for the little one.

Three Minor’s chameleons have hatched:

Meet some of the newest additions to Zoo Knoxville’s Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Campus (ARC), three Minor’s chameleons have just hatched after eight months of incubating. These tiny newcomers are only about one inch long. This species is endemic to Madagascar and is endangered due to mining and logging in their natural range.
