Zoo Knoxville Knoxville Zoo

Visited the zoo for the first time this weekend. Not too much of the place was very noteworthy but I still had a really nice time. I especially enjoyed the ARC and Asian Trek which were both excellent and give me confidence in future projects. A few updates that I don't believed have been mentioned:

-The zoo no longer has Chacoan peccaries. Domestic donkeys now inhabit the enclosure.

-A new aviary for macaws is being built between the Aldabra Tortoise yard by the ARC and the kiddie train, planned to open next year.

-Quick work is being made on the former elephant exhibit. It'll become the White Rhino Conservation Center and will open next year. Here are the photos I took of the renderings displayed around the construction.

Knoxville Zoo has had a long history with breeding white rhinos and admittedly after the last one of the elders (founder stock) passes on, there is a real need to update their rhino habitat. This concept plan for the new rhino exhibitry looks very promising. It would also seem realistic to expect the white rhino destined for Knoxville already to be on stream for the AZA SSP-wise!

Male Southern white rhinoceros arrive:

The two rhinos arrived at the Zoo on June 30, but were placed into a standard quarantine period. With the quarantine officially completed, Gus and Liam can now be seen by guests as they rotate in and out of the habitat with the other two rhinos — Mylo and Ranger.

Wasn’t expecting them to get two more young males. Does anyone know how many rhinos the exhibit can hold? I remember it being a small area for three elephants so having two separate groups of rhinos doesn’t sound pragmatic.

The article indicates the plan is to integrate the two groups of rhinos. The four males are aged 2-4 years, so this should be easily accomplished.

"Zoo guests are encouraged to check the rhino habitat regularly, as the four males will rotate throughout the day, allowing for social bonding and acclimation between the rhinos as they get to know each other," the zoo said.
