How many animals do they have now? When I visited the place a couple of weeks ago, I only saw one. I understand they now have three.

They have been legally imported from the Congo. I really respect KAK’s enthusiasm for shoebill breeding, but I do have a few concerns—mainly whether these two are also imprinted, and if the facility truly has enough space to properly manage all four birds. If they end up being placed in the Big Bill area or the African Wetlands area, I’d honestly be pretty disappointed.
Ideally, I think they should take a more dedicated approach, like what Prague Zoo does—keeping at least one pair completely off display to focus on breeding. But realistically, that might not happen.

Slight tangent, but past CITES records show that Thailand and China had plans to import anywhere from 4 to 20 shoebills at once from the Congo and other places. As far as I know, there’s no solid info confirming those birds ever arrived. Still, now that KAK has managed to import them legally, it’s possible other countries could follow suit—and that could end up leading to another tragedy like what happened with African manatees.

What happened with the African manatees?

The demand for manatees in zoos and aquariums across Asia increased, leading to the export of many individuals from the wild. Later, manatees were upgraded to CITES Appendix I, which prohibited commercial trade, but some zoos illegally imported wild-caught individuals.
Is it known which zoos or aquariums these illegal specimens ended up in?

Checking the news from the website, the director Hibashi Kazuaki cites that the two current individuals Bongo and Marimba do not get along. I feel like if the individuals being incompatible was a problem, then the park could have traded individuals with other parks to see which individual make the best pair. The kingdom should also reflect on the effect of the walkthrough and guests have on the privacy and behavior of the birds instead of continuing to be guest-centric.

Would it not be possible to pool all current shoebill storks at 1-2 institutions in JAZA zoos and initiate some kind of dating service (with partner choices for all birds now resident in Japan)?

What zoos now maintain shoebill storks and their number?

The park has confirmed that Koume the pygmy hippopotamus is pregnant. Starting from June 23rd, the park will suspend feeding commentaries and will take other precautions for Koume’s comfort. Her mate TamTam will still be on display.

I had this breeding pair down for Osaka - NIFREL.... (????). Can you elaborate how both are now at Kobe - Animal Kingdom.

BTW: Happy that the breeding program is giving results.

Iirc Koume was sent from Nagoya Higashiyama to make space for Mirai who was sent from Ishikawa. TamTam is from Nifrel and his parents are 1.0 Moto Moto and 0.1 FullFull.

Three beaver kits were born Monday this week. The news can be found on the homepage of the kingdom.

It has been determined that the new shoebills are a breeding pair. Just like the other shoebills the park has kept throughout its history, these new animals are also named after African instruments. The male is named Sakala while the Female is named Kurral.
The new shoebills will be exhibited starting in the 30th of this month. The male and female will be displayed in morning and afternoon shifts. Their exhibition is located at the exit of BigBill, called “Mabamba Camp”.
