Helsinki Zoo are celebrating the birth of two female lion cubs
Twelve-year-old female Pandora made history on the 27th of December by becoming the oldest ever female in a European Zoo to reproduce when she gave birth to the pair, who are now on show in a heated indoor exhibit. At birth, they weighed one kilogram and were blind and helpless, but now, at three months old they are significantly larger and are starting to eat meat.
The father is eight-year old Mohan, and he is an important individual in the European breeding programme as his mother is one of a few lions born from the original Zurich pair who came from Junagadh in 1991.
This is the pair's fourth successful litter, having given birth to two cubs, Basil and Boris, in 2009 - the pair since moving on to Budapest and Berlin Tierpark respectively. Yenny and Yanna were born in 2006 and now reside together at Zoo Dvur Kralove in the Czech Republic. The pair's first cub was Xylitol, born in 2005 and now residing at Tallinn Zoo. Mohan arrived at the park in March 2004 following the death of previous male Naseek a month earlier. Pandora was born at Helsinki herself, and it is believed to be the pair's last litter due to Pandora's age.
