Zoo Krefeld Krefeld zoo news

What's up next for Krefeld...I'm hoping an outdoor enclosure for the chimps. Or a completly new enclosure for the snowleopards. Krefeld has been breeding regularly with snowleopards I just think they deserve a better enclosure. Maybe creating more space by also tearing down the siamang enclosure (because that is also subpar )

Birdhouse open again !

Yesterday I visited Krefeld Zoo and I had heared the Birdhouse would be opened again on Eastern after a long renovation. Althrough yesterday it was still not Eastern I found an open Birdhouse ! It originaly opened in 1989 and had some real nice breeding-results in it ( among others Egyptian plovers ).
Because it got a little outdated an expensive renovation had to take place and at the end it costed almost 650.000 Euros.

In the renovated ( 700 squar-meter large ) birdhouse 5 themed landscape aviaries are placed :
- Neotropical rainforest
- Oriental rainforest
- Madagascar
- African savanne
- African riverbank
When completly finished the house will be home to around 80 bird in 25 species but the birds will be placed not all at once and yesterday the complete avifauna of the house contained .... 1 species !
Also the signs were still not placed so I don't know which species will be kept at the end in the aviaries.
Evenso, the house looked nice and I guess it will become a real gem at the zoo in times coming.
I've already up-loaded some pictures of the - mostly - empty enclosures in the Gallery.

I was in Krefeld yesterday and the bird house is being filled up. The current species list:
African riverbank: golden-breasted starling, carmee bee-eaters and kittlitz's plovers*.
African savannah: Village weaver
Madagascar: Madagascan ibis
Neotropical rainforest: Brazilian tanager, helmeted (?) currasow, and something I can't recall.
Oriental rainforest: Oriental magpie-robin, blue-crowned hanging parrot, pheasant pigeon
Free-living: wattled jacana, Asian fairy bluebird, shalow's turaco (not seen)
* they were just being introduced in the hall and still in a cage within the avairy. I couldn't see them very well but when I asked a keeper which species it was, they replied "regenpfeifer, hirtenregenpfeifer."

All things considered it is a small but very pleasent bird house with a nice collection.

Krefeld, by the way, is a fine little zoo. Some very old outdated enclosures are dotted around among the newer and renovated ones. One of the main reasons to visit was the mountain anoa, which we succesfully saw. The ape house, the little rainforest house, a very active tree kangaroo and good food in the zoo café were other highlights. The zoo is overrun with red squirrels. They are everywhere!

On monday Gorilla-female Tumba died on an age of 45 years. The group of old gorillas kept in the inside enclosure now only counts 2 animals : male Massa ( 48 ) and female Boma ( 46 ).

As I have just learned today, Tumba died on May 13, 2019 in Krefeld Zoo.
Only hours passed from the first symptoms on Monday morning until death. So rapidly worsened the general condition of the female gorilla, which was also unsuccessful intensive veterinary care. The pathological examination revealed a cause of severe intestinal inflammation.

TUMBA was born in 1973 in Africa.
At the age of 2 years she was in france Port of Marseille discovered on a ship and confiscated.
With BOMA (who was with her on this ship) and MASSA, the idiosyncratic-looking gorilla lady forms a group of seniors in Krefeld Zoo.
TUMBA was mother several times, but only one of her children survived. Her last child together with MASSA is called KIRA, was born in 1995 and now lives in the Moscow Zoo.

I notice on their website that the zoo is open until 7:00, but the animal houses close at 5:30. So, does that mean that animals are still outside for viewing until 7ish?

The remaining Dall sheep will move to Wildpark Potzberg (also the destination of Leipzig's Dall sheep) and their enclosure will house Forest reindeer from next year onwards.
