Zoo Krefeld Krefeld zoo news

on the 12th of June the Red flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber) had 16 nests and laid already 13 eggs! At the time Zoo Krefeld had 41 red flamingos.

Two mountain zebras arrived at the zoo (1.1, both born 2019), another mare will join them in the future.

The male named Turyn (12/05/2019) came from Zoo Plock (Poland) and the female named Zora (26/07/2019) came from Tierpark Herberstein (Austria). According to the zoo's instagram another female will come from the UK.

Recently, the last two of the smooth-fronted caimans (Paleosuchus trigonatus) hatched in 2020 moved to Aquazoo Düsseldorf. They're not on show yet, as the enclosure there has to be fixed first. The other 14 young moved to France earlier, where they participate in a scientific study about caimans before they will be transferred to one or more zoos.

Do we know more about the facility where the young moved in France as there was just one in Beauval before ?

Unfortunately not. The post didn't mention anything more, it just sounded like they went to a university or research institute. As to what happens afterwards, they didn't mention any specific location or time, so maybe the zoo(s) won't necessarily be in France, too.

That was what I understood too. It is sad to not know more about the university as it could be interesting to follow the study.

Two western plantain-eaters (Crinifer piscator) are now on display in the bird-house and three female thuringian forest goats have been added to the petting zoo area. The goats will be part of a breeding program for endangered livestock breeds. The five african pygmy goats that used to be kept in the enclosure have been moved to a farm in Krefeld-Traar (Kirschkamperhof).

Sadly 31-year old female Eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli) Nane passed away. She was born in 1991 Zoo Berlin and arrived in Zoo Krefeld 1994, she gave birth a total of 5 times!

Additional info: The zoo found out she suffered from a "colon sickness" (don't know how to translate it better, sorry). Her partner Usoni is supposed to get a new female eventually.
Nane did also not only gave birth five times, she also had seven "grandchildren" already, two of which have been released into the wild in Rwanda.

Had a really enjoyable visit to Krefeld today. Some news:
- Recently, a two-toed sloth was born, though I didn't see it unfortunately
- The female mountain zebra is currently off-show due to treatment of a sickness/injury
- I was surprised to see that the tamanduas seem to be gone or off-show (on ZTL they are mentioned both without a subspecies and ssp. straminea). The enclosure was empty, seemed uninhabited and the sign was taken off
- There is a sign saying that the first part of the new ape complex will be an expansion of the current gorilla outdoor enclosure on the adjacent space where the old house stood. It says that the construction will take place from january to june 2022, but since it's late march already and from what I saw, absolutely nothing has happened yet, let's see...

Today, Krefeld Zoo announced that the tamandua is back on show. It was behind the scenes due to "technical works" or something, I didn't see any construction on my visit, but maybe they started later. However, they only mention one tamandua, so maybe only one remains at the zoo.
