Kyiv Zoo Kyiv zoo

The opportunity to evacuate animals from Kyiv Zoo has now passed; they have enough food supplies to last 10 days:

Why is Ukraine’s only gorilla ‘impossible to evacuate’?

Trantin says elephants and other vulnerable species are being given sedatives to calm them down during the shooting.

"Moreover, our keepers are staying with them overnight."

Evacuation from another zoo (reported above) included five bears. They’ve been safely evacuated and offered refuge in Poland for the duration of the war:

Despite being surrounded by Russian tanks en route, the convoy of five bears made it through the occupation line and arrived safely at their destination, prompting claims of a “miracle” from zoo workers.

A family of three European hamsters at Kyiv Zoo have been reintroduced to the wild on Tarutino Steppe in the Ukrainian Danube Delta region. The hamsters are currently hibernating in an artificial den. The plan is for further releases of captive-bred hamsters from the zoo in spring next year.

How great to see people still working for animals and the environment while in the middle of what’s going on in Ukraine. Admirable.

A second group of European hamsters, consisting of eight females and seven males, have moved from Kyiv Zoo to be released at the Tarutino Steppe in the Ukrainian Danube Delta.

Currently, they are being kept in a 600 square metre enclosure, but the protective fencing will be removed once the animals have acclimatised and formed a colony. Further releases are planned for next year. It is currently thought that the first three animals released are still doing well.
