There are 4 meerkats in Los Angeles according to my contacts in quarantine. Barky from VA as a companion for Chico and 3 kats from North Carolina. possibility they will put 2 kats in the old prairie dog exhibit and the 3 NC kats in the meerkat exhibit. I'm glad LA will get the Meerkats back in numbers

Cool! I didn't know that.

The old prairie dog exhibit had been under renovation for some time now and I wondered what had happened. I know that the zoo only had one prairie dog left and was on exhibit with the antelope ground squirrels in the nursery side of the children's zoo, but I thought they would all be put back on the dog exhibit when finished.

I would rather see the three in the old prairie dog exhibit, as it's bigger and it allows for more digging.

Just found this, not sure if its been posted yet but I didn't see it:

Next month, the Los Angeles Zoo will transform the habitats of the American black bears, Sumatran tigers, snow leopards and Sichuan takins into a snowy winter wonderland.

It's not often Los Angeles gets snow. As in "not often," I mean never, so you may want to save the date now.

The event is scheduled for the weekend of March 14 and 15.

Cool! I know the zoo did that a couple of years ago, but only for the bears.

Snow for snow leopards would be cool, something I've wanted to photograph for years. I tried last month at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, but their new exhibit is not very good. I go to L.A. a lot to visit family, but may not be able to make this.

When I was there the last week of January, a golden monkey was in the exhibit but the main viewing house was barracaded. When are they going to open it to the public?

I doubt you saw a golden monkey, because they are not at the zoo yet. I don't think anybody knows when they'll will arrive.

mstickman,

When is your next update for the LA Zoo?

Any news on more Californian/Peninsular pronghorn coming in from the semi captive herd out at the desert project area?

Any info on when the young Oklahoma born female Indian rhino is to be shipped out to WPZ, Dubbo, Australia?

Any interesting snippets on other unusual animals at the zoo or building projects?

Cheers,

Jelle

I haven't heard anything lately, other than the fact that construction of the elephant exhibit keeps going on. Also no other news on the peninsular pronghorns or rhino.

Congrats on the birth of a Black Duiker! I'm always so impressed on the rare species you guys can breed.

PS - I have yet to see Chelsea, the Black Duiker you guys sent us in Winter 07 but hopefully she will be on exhibit this spring/summer.

mstickmanp,

Can you elaborate somewhat on the species loaned out:
0.0.4 Exuma Island Iguana to San Diego?
(ISIS listed 1.2 at LA Zoo ...)
Is LAZoo going out of rock iguanas and is San Diego seriously considering going into breeding a fourth taxon (after Cubans, Cayman blues and Anegadas)?

The Madagascan spider tortoise coming in?
Make up a breeding group with a male?
What ssp. is LAZoo keeping exactly?

What about the confiscated Geochelone yniphora?

Cheers

Sorry, but I don't really know the answers to any of the questions. I got all the info from the zoo's member paper and it doesn't really go into any detail.

Really? I thought they were in quarantine while the exhibit is finished. I could've sworn I saw them in a large off-site exhibit on the hillside when you're leaving the South America section of the zoo (near the Andean condor) I guess not... :p

Also, any word on Chico and his new companion?

The monkeys you saw are the Red Uakari monkeys.

And about Chico, I have about 100 photos in my Flickr account. Here is the link: Meerkat - a set on Flickr

I also have photos of the 4 new meerkats.

I just learned that Columbus' male Red Flanked Duiker, Raspberry, will be heading to LA in a few months. He is a very good breeder if any of your females are "available."

Cool! Maybe we will have more babies in the future.

Also, how many duikers do you guys have in total?

Raspberry? Seriously how do you think that makes him feel to be given such an emasculating name? ;)

We only have Raspberry, a male Red Flanked and Chelsea, a black duiker that we got from you guys in winter 2007. So with Raspberry's departure we will only have Chelsea. I would love to have more Black Duikers or another species of duiker like Yellow Backed or Blue.

Hello ZooChat members, I just posted my introduction thread several minutes ago. As a charter member of GLAZA(40+ years), I'll try to answer some of the information about the LA zoo as well that's been kicking around the sight. As a recent invite of a charter members only breakfast on Feb. 6, my wife and I were shuttled from the zoo entrance to the breakfast sight, right in front of the african wild dog exhibit. On our trip back down to the parking lot, I happened to ask the zoo docent driving us about the arrival of the Golden Monkeys. His words, "the city council decided not to continue the funding for them a couple of weeks ago. The zoo will still try to exhibit some other type of Asian primates instead. Maybe langurs." I hope that's not the final word on them, but could explain the lack of those monkeys in the exhibit; though I was at the zoo today and saw the lone mangabey still in there.

On a brighter note, while viewing the Steller's Sea Eagles, I noticed the female was nesting. Asking the keeper that was present about this, since I'd never observed them nesting in the past she affirmed that "they are nesting for the first time," and that they know that there is at least one egg. They are very delighted and hopefull.

The four new meerkats are doing just fine in their new home, along with the older chico and his new senior buddy in the nursery display. And the Pachyderm Forest construction is proceeding very well. You can even view Billy in a new yard as you pass the snow leopards and enter the South American section.

This weekend is when selected exhibits like the tigers, black bears, snow leopards and takins will be given the snow treatment. My wife wants to see that. And there is something going on in the Australia section, for the entire area was closed and noisy. I did find out at the breakfast last month that they are rebuilding the tamarin colony. That's the construction going on to the left of the Koala house. Hopefully the construction noise I heard in there also includes the former Koala house remodeling as well.

I hope what you heard about the golden monkeys it's not true. That's also weird because I was sent a letter by the zoo reminding me to renew my membership, and in the letter it had a photo of a golden monkey and they made it sound as though they were coming.

Also, welcome to zoochat blackduiker!
