Hey Mario, what's up with the Royal Antelope information? Shortly after reading this post I visited the zoo, and yes, the map did show Royal Antelopes in the "former" Red-flanked Duiker exhibit, but on my arrival to that location no Royal Antelopes. The Duiker sign was still on display and I believe the Duikers were still there as well. And according to ISIS, which I just recently checked, now only one remaining Royal Antelope for Los Angeles. I know you generally volunteer on weekends, so maybe you'll have an update this evening. My last visit was 2 weeks ago.

I haven't been up to the exhibit yet, so I don't know if they are on exhibit.

@Zoogoer: Yeah, that hammock took forever to finish, and it was supposed to be 10x10 ft, but we came to the conclusion that it was too big.

I forgot to mention that last week I got to see the new snow leopard cubs on exhibit. I was there early in the morning, so they were very active.

I was there yesterday but no cubs. There was one adult out though, and I just got a glimpse of him/her walking across the exhibit and back into the den. And at 98 degrees, that would explain there being no cubs out.

Maybe because of the heat they put them in or maybe they were just hiding.

Zoo News

This is the new "Zoo News" thread for the zoo since the other one is already 8 pages long.

According to the zoos press release, the zoo debuted the new Francois's Langurs today, which may mean that the china exhibit is finally open!!!! I'll be at the zoo on saturday, so I'll confirm if it did open.

The press release also talks about the new giant otters and about the Maned Wolf.

Not meaning to upstage you in any way, but Friday is my off day and I'm considering visiting the zoo again then. Even though I was just there Monday after a dental appointment. And although they opened the exhibit to the press on the 8th(Thursday), they may not necessarily be opening it to the public the very next day. I know this from past experience. It really is about time though!

No problem. All I wish is that it is open already.

Since the press realease is now out, can we release the male&female giant otters names?

Ok, I guess we'll have to figure out the female later.

Just to let you all know, Rijo (From Philadelphia's 2006 litter) is the male giant otter

Well I made it out to the zoo today, the Langurs are out, and I'm thrilled to death! This exhibit was well worth the wait; Golden Monkeys or not! I didn't arrive till early afternoon, so some of the photos were not taken under the best lighting conditions, but I'll start uploading them in the next few minutes. And Mario, you were right in an earlier post, the viewing area, even looking down at the lower levels is fantastic. Hopefully you'll get there a little earlier tomorrow when the lighting is more appropriate for a photo session. No Muntjac or Pheasant yet though, nor any signs either. But overall, I'm absolutely thrilled with this exhibit!:):D:cool:

BTW, I just uploaded some photos that I took last week.

EDIT: Also, I just uploaded two photos that I took back in June of the new exhibit.

I went to the zoo and the new exhibit is excellent. It is officially the best exhibit at the zoo. The langurs have tons of climbing structures and vertical space. The floor space is also big, so when the pheasants and muntjacs arrive, they will have lots of space. The only thing is that hopefully the langurs don't eat all the plants. The level of detail in the trees is something that the Bronx or Woodland park zoo would have. With the addition of the muntjacs and pheasants this exhibit will be better. Yes the exhibit does not have the rare Golden Monkeys, but everyone at the zoo is happy that the exhibit is finally being used and that we got an amazing langur species. I'll post some photos later on.

Thanks for the link! If you guys beat out Denver with a sooner opening date you'll have the BEST Asian Elephant Exhibit in the country!
