Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens LA Zoo News 2012

Though when things were much more a crisis situation for the species back in the 1970s, they still exhibited one lone male (Topa Topa), who is still living, in what is now the Cape Griffon Vulture aviary; built specifically for California Condors.

I wonder if the Houston Zoo, along with several other Texas zoos, have any of their Houston Toads on exhibit as well as a successful breeding program?

I remember when the Sacramento Zoo was breeding Yosemite toads that they had a Yosemite toad on exhibit. With the condor crisis in the 1970s-1980s it made sense that they pulled everyone off exhibit but now there are several hundred and obviously there are birds that have become zoo ambassadors at several other places.

Several years ago I remember seeing a plan in an LA Zoo newsletter that showed a condor aviary along the entrance pathway (not sure where exactly)...hopefully it will happen someday.

A couple of years ago I remember there being a frog exhibited next to the Couch's Spadefoot Toad exhibit in the Desert Trail. I don't really remember what species it was, but I believe that was a Mountain Yellow-footed Frog. It was later taken off exhibit and that tank has remained empty ever since. If it was a Mountain Yellow-footed Frog, then maybe it was taken off exhibit when San Diego sent some here for breeding.

Hope they bring their Cyclura (only ones of their species) back on display from San Diego ... Plus perhaps angonokas .... Who knows!!!

I doubt we will see any of those. The original plan did talk of angonokas as a feature species and ISIS did show a single specimen at the LA Zoo about 2-3 years ago, but that specimen is no longer listed in ISIS.

The master plan that dates back to about 1996 included a future California habitat area for California Condors, Grizzly Bears, and Mountain Lions. It would consist of the entire hillside stretching roughly from just past the Children's Zoo and Zoo Grill area, to just past and encompassing Swan Lake.

Some species that have been in the collection for years but I've heard no mention of a LAIR return yet include; Prehensile-tailed Skink, Cantil, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Green Anaconda, Central American Milk Snake, Blue-tongued Skink, Storr's Monitor, Exuma Island Iguana, Mexican Spiny-tailed Iguana, Crocodile Monitor, Cottonmouth, California Striped Racer, Chinese Alligator, just to name a few. The loss of some of these would be quite unfortunate.

what up people out in LA. Im so mad:mad: cause im 2429.70 miles away from LA on the east coast and i would love to see LAIR someday. For the people that are fortunate to see the grand opening on March 8th please do a review on it :) thks. And a ? for ya all what exhibit are you most looking forward too. If i was out there it would probably be the chinese giant salamander;).

Yeah, I probably won't make it to the zoo till the 17th, but hopefully either Blackduiker or DavidBrown will make it to the zoo before me and write a nice review as well as provide some nice pictures. I'm also looking forward to the Chinese Giant Salamander, but for some reason after seeing the video I posted last week I'm really excited about the outdoor lizard/tortoise exhibit.

I'm hoping to get over there on March 8 and will try and get lots of photos and write up a review. I've been holding up writing up an overall LA Zoo review until the LAIR opens. I am really looking forward to the return of the false gharials. They have been off exhibit for many years since they were only on exhibit when they were youngsters and only now will there be a decent exhibit for them.

I hope to make it out on the 8th or shortly after. My reviews are usually quite limited, but the photos will be in abundance. And the Giant Chinese Salamander would probably be tops on my list as well, along with the Lungfish. I'm excited about everything to be honest. I walked that old Reptile house from the year it first opened back in 1966, right up until its closure. All I can say is, finally, the wait is almost over!

The January 17 Zoo Commission Meeting minutes have been posted. Here are the highlights:

-The zoo acquired Rainbow fish and Archerfish for the LAIR.
-The zoo will be receiving several animals:
--a male Greater Malay Chevrotain for breeding.
--a female chimp from the Knoxville Zoo.
--a female Blue-billed Curassow for breeding.

With lungfish, rainbow fish, and archer fish in the LAIR they may need to rename it the LAIRF:).

I assume you will make an appearance and give us some tidings later on? :D

Hopefully on the 7th, I need to take some time from work though, and that's tentative. And I will have my camera ready.

More in the series of Slash and Betty White commercials for LAIR. A bit corny but a little sneak peek at some of the new exhibits:

Thanks for the link David. From the end of the article it almost seems like there was a soft-opening today. Considering Mondays tend to be the slowest days at the zoo I wouldn't be surprised.

Also interesting how the article mentions 75 species when we've been hearing about 60 species for quite some time now.

I can't believe it opens this week!
