Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens LA Zoo News 2012

Blackduiker

The whole sea lion exhibit has been confusing from the beginning. The sea lions disappeared without warning and got replaced with harbor seals, and now it seems like it is happening again possibly? Or perhaps only some of the harbor seals are leaving? I guess that time will tell. It seems logical that sea lions would return at some point.

It's possible the zoo now wants to make the entire Aquatics area, a part of the new LAIR complex. The current Grey seal exhibit being the only remaining holdout. The Harbor seals in Sea Life Cliffs were always considered a temporary solution to the ever changing plans there. As with the future of the last remnants of the old Aquatics section; what to do there has also come up in past discussions as well. And we've been left with a question mark until possibly now. I would suggest, one more try with Sea Lions; the vast majority of visitors still remember it being initially built for them, since they are still calling the seals "Sea Lions." But if all else fails, why not consider Sea Otters or possibly penguins? The addition of Sea Otters was part of the proposed master plan; the conversion of the Brown Pelican/former Sea Lion pool. And penguins were always extremely popular whenever exhibited here, and are sorely missed.

SEA OTTERS! That is a fantastic idea Blackduiker. LA could become a great home of otter diversity.

LA Zoo management that reads these posts, please make it so.:)

The latest issue of Zoo View is out and its completely dedicated to the new LAIR, and the work with its inhabitants; current and future. One of the better issues I've seen in several years. With the first hatching of Komodo Dragons at the L. A. Zoo back in 2010, the Sydney Taronga Zoo was one of the first to express interest in a deal for some of them. With Los Angeles seeking a new male koala for some time, a deal was struck. After agreeing to send seven dragons to Sydney, the L.A. Zoo received its new male koala, plus future options for several rare Australian reptiles. Some are already on display in LAIR, while other species await arrival, such as the Giant Snake-necked Turtle, Rough-scaled Python, and Glauert's Dwarf Monitor. And with the existing U.S. population of such once common species as the Shingle-backed Skink and Blue-tongued Skink growing older, Reptile Curator Ian Recchio hopes to revitalize them, by attempting to breed new arrivals from Australia.

The future options for Oz reptiles is pretty cool. Glad to see such a deal could be done. What OZ species are already on display in LAIR, Blackduiker? I wish instead of Kimberley Rock Monitors, they would get Perentie, but that's just me.

The article didn't name them and I would only be guessing myself. And I was also hoping for Perenties too. :) But still a nice trade and the future looks bright.

Completely agree, Blackduiker. The trade has many possibilities and the future does indeed look bright. Would be nice to have other Oz reptiles besides bearded dragons and frilled dragons, in Oz exhibits. What's sad is that the frilled dragons used for Oz exhibits are usually the New Guinea locale. I've only seen an Oz frilled at National Aquarium in Baltimore or, private collections.

All I can say is, do NOT visit the Los Angeles Zoo on a weekend. From my recent trips it was already crowded to the point of becoming unenjoyable on a Saturday. And now their attendance is increasing? Ouch!

As of May 2012 the tapir is now in the former hippo exhibit (itself a former rhino yard repurposed as a "temporary" hippo exhibit when the old hippo exhibit was torn down and the space incorporated into the new elephant exhibit).

Which tapir? The Baird's or the Mountain?

The tapir is a Bairds. You might like to know that a wombat will be coming to the zoo in the near future.

Excellent news. The Baird's Tapir is temporarily awaiting its new Rainforest home, while we haven't exhibited wombats for some years now. Still awaiting news on the Sumatran Rhino though.

This is great news! Baird's Tapirs are always neat and the news of a Wombat coming is even better! I wonder where the Wombat will be exhibited...
