Closed Labeling Photos: What you like, and don't like?

I like for ex. "Rhino Reserve- Black Rhinoceros exhibit".
(follow up below)-(History about Rhino Reserve or that exhibit)
Or I like what a few members do you are wondering what is in the exhibit, ex. "Rhino Reserve-Rhinoceros exhibit"
(follow up below)-Holds a black rhinoceros.
Or I like what I do, ex. "Rhino Reserve"
(follow up below)- Black rhinoceros exhibit
I also like it when you tell what attraction the animal in the photo is in, ex. "Night Hunters-Bearcat"
And lastly, if you label the animals name and then tell where it is at the zoo, ex. "Padmae"
(follow up)- An aardvark in the Children's Zoo nursery.

What I don't like

When you have the same follow up words as the title, ex. "Elephant Reserve-Male holding yard"
(follow up)-Elephant Reserve-Male holding yard.
When you say the exhibit but not the attraction it's in unless it does not belong to one. My example is talking about Night Hunters at the Cincy Zoo, ex. "Fennec Fox exhibit"
(Follow up)-
Or when you have a picture of an exhibit but no attraction, ex. "Rhino Reserve"
(Follow up)-

If I have insulted your way of labeling, I am sorry. I would like to point out that snowleopard is #1 on my labeling list.

Thanks for ranking me #1, and that was very kind of you! Anyway, what frustrates me is when photos are not dated. For example sometimes I look at a photo of an old bear grotto, thinking that it is a pity that a zoo still has an enclosure like that but in actuality perhaps the grotto had been bulldozed years ago when the photo was taken. Why not at the very least label a photo with an approximate date?

I hate:

"IMG4589632"
And no followup below.

or, in a simialr vein:

"San Diego Zoo"
And no followup below.

"Nambala's cage"
And no description of what species Nambala is.

:p

Mine is the same as Hix.

And while not exactly labelling, I hate when people post a dozen shots in a row of virtually the same thing.

Yeah, I thought about adding that, but it wasn't a labelling issue so I decided to focus on the question at hand. However, I am 100% against it too.

If a person posted a close up photo of a particular animal, hardly showing the exhibit around it, would you still want to know the exhibit and section of the zoo it's in? This is a honest question as I like agree with the labeling and will probably do it more in the future. Just curious about the photos focused more on the certain animal.

I'm going to say yes, but I can't tell if this is positive or not.

This is what I said that might have confused you. I meant to say:

Lack of dates on a photo is my biggest annoyance. Yes, most people upload recent photos and the EXIF information is usually (but not always!) there if you care to hunt for it ... however, for consistency, I would prefer to see all photos contain at least a month+year in the title (not in the description!), so you can quickly identify how old a photo is - even if it is a recent photo (it will only get older as time goes by!).

I'm actually considering making the date a separate (and required!) field for photos being uploaded in the next version of ZooChat.

No.

But I can always ask later if I become curious.

If a member gives some information on the photo, for example Gentle Lemur does with several of his photos stating if there male/female which paddock there in and the date which I think is the most important.:)

Not sure if I like that idea, I mean, you can kind of already see the date on the photo/camera description. But I suppose I can give it a try.

Not everyone has EXIF information attached to their photos (some editing programs strip the information, and scanned photos don't have it at all).

I was thinking of something along the lines of just a month and year, with "unknown" being a valid option too.

I could even have it pre-fill the information based on the EXIF data if present - so for most people it should be zero effort.

The important thing I want to be able to achieve with this is to be able to order photos by the date they were taken (not by the date they were uploaded), so that you can then start to more easily see changes over time to exhibits, zoo features, etc.

I have an idea sort of like this. How about you try this:

-Have the same link to a zoo's gallery page.
-Have the one page with categories labeled "Animals", "Exhibits", "Landscape", "Signage". So people can view exactly what they want to see. As for me I like to see all photos of exhibits and occasionally one amazing close up shot of an animal.
Below is what I mean.

I have an idea sort of like this.

I think that's a great idea - it's something I've been thinking of for a while and I think you've probably nailed the main categories we'd need too - thanks.

I'd be interested to hear other people's suggestions on this and related ideas for the gallery too.

Please keep the suggestions coming!

Glad you liked it..:):)

I am trying something different for my labeling. I wanted to experiment and see if more people would view my photos if I labeled them the way I like. Here is what I am doing for now on.

Title: Amazon Milk frog exhibit
Bottom: Reptile House. Exhibit number(to the left): 4

I used to do this.

You think more people would like this change?

I think this is a fantastic idea, Sim. This would be a great way to compare the old and new Henry Doorly Zoo a few years down the road! :p

@Moebelle- Your new idea for labeling photos is very efficient. I like it.

I also agree that the m/d/y format (or d/m/y however it goes) should be required. I'll label the dates in my photos as well, and the perfect time to do so: I'm taking a trip to the Bronx Zoo on Thursday! Glad everybody's posted some suggestions.

the salient point in dating photos is that Americans can't do it right so it may end up being confusing
