The former site of the Water Science Museum (as google translated it) in Namegata city, Ibaraki prefecture is being made into a small zoo. The Lake Kasumigaura Doubutsu to Minna no Ie (translates to the house of animals and everyone) is set to open in July 31. The park is operated by Kasumigaura Fureai Land, which I wasn’t able to find much information about. The representative company Moff however got me scratching my head. Moff is a company that runs many animal cafes and an ostrich farm which the animals are kept in conditions ranging from less than ideal to unacceptable. This is where most of the animals, such as domestics, owls, and cats, might be getting sourced from. What I find interesting is that the park plans to exhibit giraffes, animal Moff hasn’t had experience with. On their website it also lists prehensile-tailed porcupine, an animal that is not publicly displayed anywhere in Japan.

Judging from the construction images from the press release, I would not be surprised if the opening of this facility gets postponed.

According to the website, the zoo has three species of toucans on display, so that's quite interesting. Glad to see prehensile tailed porcupine finally be displayed publicly in Japan.

I've had friends there on the opening day, but she said that everything seemed incomplete.
A lot of enclosures were unoccupied, construction everywhere, no signs, etc

I heard that they had to open the zoo based on contract with the local government, so they just opened the incomplete zoo.

The zoo will be receiving/has received one male giraffe from Tobu Zoo and Himeji Central Park each. I also heard that one other male will arrive from Adventure World but I couldn’t confirm it. The zoo has been closed since November 20 to prepare for the arrival of the giraffes. The giraffes are planned to be on display in December.

The giraffes have arrived. Niko from Himeji, Chaka from Adventure World, and Natsuki from Tobu will be staying together as a bachelor herd, which according to the signage of the zoo is a new initiative in Japan.
