I visited Lakeland Wildlife Oasis again today, even though it was quite busy it was still a great visit, and I managed to see a good number of animals, including their newest additions and even some often no-shows. Here's a few things of note:
- The black curassows left the zoo a while ago, their old aviary is now shared between emperor tamarins, Azara's agouti, and at least one lilac-breasted roller that used to live in the African aviary. Meanwhile the emperor tamarin's old enclosure is now home to the new Northern Luzon giant cloud rats and Northern tree shrews.
- The coral reef tank was recently redeveloped and looks a lot better than it used to, with some new species including Japan surgeonfish, sailfin tangs and sea goldies. Granted the dark blue lighting made photos difficult, but I am very impressed with how the tank looks now.
- After four visits over the last year and a half, today marks the very first time I've seen the zoo's Gambian pouched rat Jayne, who has been a no-show every other time I've tried to look for her. She was playing with some enrichment made from an old egg carton, and I managed to get a good photo. Jayne has also moved to a different enclosure, adjacent to the sheltered viewing window into the crane and dik-dik enclosure. Her old enclosure in the nocturnal area now houses some sun beetles.
- Some of the leafcutter ants has escaped from their rope and were climbing along a beam to reach a tree they weren't supposed to access, the one in between the chrysalis cabinet and the stick insect enclosure. I pointed this out to a staff member and she said they would need to get rid of the new scent trail the ants have made away from the rope.
