Marineland of New Zealand, Napier (Closed) last dolphin at Marineland dies

First Five Seals Leave Marineland

Five of Marineland's remaining eight animals have left for Australia, with the last three to leave in March. This must be the most drawn out closure of a zoo ever.

Five of Napier's last Marineland mammals have taken their one- way trip to Australia.

Californian sea lions Dakota and Orion, New Zealand fur seals Iha and Ollie, and sub-antarctic fur seal Mako flew out of Auckland on a commercial Air New Zealand flight yesterday morning.

The historic marine centre's last eight animals began their 120-day pre-export quarantine period in August.

The animals, each in their own crate, travelled from their Marine Pde home to Hawke's Bay Airport on Tuesday evening, and were put on an air force Hercules.

The air force stepped in to help the council because no commercial flights from Napier were big enough to carry the animals' travelling crates to Auckland International Airport.

Four keepers accompanied the animals on their flight across the Tasman.

The animals were given no food or water while in transit. All can survive for several days without food or water but these animals went without for less than 24 hours.

Senior keeper Regan Beckett was happy the animals were going to quality homes, and that they would be in "caring and capable hands".

Iha is going to Melbourne Zoo, Ollie to Taronga Zoo in Sydney, and the other three are headed for Sea World at Surfers' Paradise.

Molly, Mr Bo and Pania are due to leave Marineland in March next year. Their trip has been delayed because of Sea World having commitments to other animal imports, and Melbourne being able to quarantine only one animal at a time.

The flights will cost the council $47,000.

Marinelands Last Inhabitants Leave

The last three animals at Marineland - three NZ Fur Seals have left for new homes in Australia. Sadly one of the Californian Sea Lions, Dakota, died shortly after arriving at Sea World. It doesn't appear as though any of the Marineland animals went to Pet Porpoise Pool in the end.

The last of Marineland's seals are today leaving the ageing Napier facility to spend their remaining years in Australia.

New Zealand fur seals Molly, Mr Bo and Pania are off to zoos in Australia.

Molly and Mr BoJangles are going to Sea World on the Gold Coast, and Pania to Melbourne Zoo.

Their departure follows those of their colleagues, Californian sea lions Dakota and Orion, New Zealand fur seals Iha and Ollie, and sub-antarctic fur seal Mako who were flown across the ditch in December.

Iha is at Melbourne Zoo; Ollie at Sydney's Taronga Zoo, and Orion and Mako are at Sea World.

Dakota, who was ten, sadly died at Sea World, in January.

Tuesday will see the three remaining seals will each be put in their own crate for a trip by truck to Auckland in the afternoon, then flown to Australia on Wednesday.

They were unable to travel with the other seals last year because Sea World had commitments to other animal imports, and Melbourne Zoo can only quarantine one animal at a time.

Senior keeper Regan Beckett, who had been present at the birth of 11-year-old Mr BoJangles, said he was happy the animals were going to quality homes.

"It's not actually 'goodbye'. It's 'we'll see you again'," he said.

"Australia's obviously not that far away. Obviously none of the staff are too happy about it, to say goodbye, however we're happy they're going to quality homes. It's a bittersweet ending for us," he said.

Napier Mayor Bill Dalton said Marineland had been "a great facility for tourism for Napier" and "the challenge now of course is to replace it with an equally attractive facility".

The seals have been under quarantine since 2014.

After arrival in Australia they have to go through an Australian quarantine period of 30 days before they can join the zoo populations.

The flights will cost the council $47,000.

Marineland closed in 2008. The departure of the last animals means Napier City Council can progress a planned $5.7 million redevelopment of Marine Parade, including a skate park below the Marineland grandstand, which is being retained, a reef garden and a tiered amphitheatre.

here's an article about the death of Dakota the sealion:

Dakota, a Californian sea lion rehomed from Napier's Marineland to Sea World on the Gold Coast, has died.

Dakota had been in Australia since December 10 and was unwell for a few weeks before she died, Napier City Council said.

An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of death.

Marineland opened in 1965 and closed to the public in 2008. Animals remained in the care of Marineland after it closed to the public.

"Our Marineland staff are very sad, but we are grateful for the amazing care Dakota has received from the staff at Sea World," Napier City Council tourism services manager Neil Fergus said.

One of Dakota's keepers at Marineland had travelled to Sea World to assist.

New Zealand fur seal Iha is at Melbourne Zoo, New Zealand fur seal Ollie is at Sydney's Taronga Zoo, and Californian sea lion Orion and sub-Antarctic fur seal Mako are at Sea World. All were transferred last year from Marineland.

The three remaining Marineland fur seals - Molly, Mr Bo, short for Mr Bojangles, and Pania will travel to Australia in March.

Marineland being demolished

Walking along Napier waterfront last week and saw that the remains of Marineland are being demolished. Will try and post some photos, but they are not very good ones, taken over the fence.
