Interesting that 2 mountain tapir have arrived, I always thought they were a phase out due to lack of availability. How many does this bring the zoo to having now, and are they still a part of a breeding programme for the species?

Maybe these two tapirs were the ones that were still at the Moutain View Conservation and Breeding Center in Canada. This might mean that the only zoos left with Mountain Tapirs are the LA zoo and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

Does anyone know, whether the "new" mountain Tapirs are the one´s from Canada, or not ?

Thank you in advance !

I have no idea, but that would make the most sense. San Francisco has not had theirs for a while and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo still has theirs.

Thanks for sharing this Blackduiker! It's nice to see that another bettong has arrived in Toronto. It is also interesting to see that the LA zoo has acquired 4 echidnas. Did they come from Australia?

As of yet, there is no news as to where they arrived from. A few zoo insiders may be better able to answer that.

The sugar gliders and echidnas are future residents of the soon to open Australia House, AKA the former Koala House. Wombat and brush-tailed bettong are also set to go on exhibit there.

Those are Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats correct? I saw the echidnas in the second week of January as they were in with the koalas.

Is the koala house the big building past the komodo exhibit? I've always seen there be a seasonal exhibit there and I never go in.

Yes, Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat. That was the Koala House, and after they were no longer exhibited there it was used for special exhibitions. Like a mechanical dinosaur display and during the opening of the original Spiderman movie, a temporary live spider exhibit. It will soon reopen as the Australia House as mentioned above.

I'm a little confused. Are there still Koalas at L.A. zoo (but in another exhibit) or are they all gone (and if so, where)?

@zoomaniac: The koalas are displayed outdoors as the California weather allows them too. There are two of them and their exhibit has live trees that they can climb to an extent. They are Australian native Brachychiton which makes for great photos.

@blackduiker: Has their been any release statement or visuals that describe what the Australia house will look like? Sugar gliders and echidnas doesn't sound like much of an attraction to the regular zoo visitor, but it does to me.

The zoo now has several koalas, and as OtterLord said there are two outdoor exhibits. The koala house was a nocturnal house that also had echidnas and bettongs in it. There were several trees and the echidnas and bettongs scampered around on the ground. The current group of koalas has never been exhibited in the former koala house. The zoo was koala-less for a period when the last koala in the koala house died and before a new group came over from Australia. They all now live in former kangaroo exhibits that have been converted to koala yards. The echidna and wallabies are also in with the koalas.

The zoo has not released any statement or visuals of the Australia House to my knowledge, but apparently the house is basically the same as it was when there were koalas in there. The zoo has kept the wombat in there for the last couple years. The last time that there was public access to the exhibit was for the temporary spider exhibit in 2007. This exhibit made use of the public walkway space and did not affect the animal exhibit space. I never saw how the house was used when they had robo-dinosaurs in there several years before the spiders.

@Otter Lord and David Brown: Thank you guys. I was visiting LA Zoo 3 times during the 90s and early 2000s and I saw Koalas only in the described indoor exhibit. Glad to hear that they extend their Australian collection.
