Does anyone have pictures of what the inside of the Australia House looks like.

In regards to the collection, I would say LA has a better Australian mammal collection than SD.

I wouldn't be surprised if no one has pictures - it was always dark in there and flash photography was forbidden. If anyone here does it would probably be Michael or Blackduiker.

It was essentially one large room divided into two yards by a wall. There were some trees in each of the yards where the koalas hung out. The echidnas and bettongs scampered around on the dirt floor of the yards. The public space is a large gallery/walkway in front of the yards. The entire exhibit space in the building is roughly the size of one of the outside koala yards I would guess. What you see in the outside exhibit was pretty much what the inside exhibit looked like, except it was always dark.
 
The Koala house was always dark; with the exception of about the first hour of opening. Then it was fully lit to allow for keepers to clean and place fresh eucalyptus for feeding. That would, by far, have been the best time for photo opportunities but I can't say that I ever took advantage of the light. I do recall videotaping there during darkened visits, but not with great success.

One or both could be held off exhibit in the Gottlieb Health and Conservation Center; they do have holding and quarantine facilities there since its opening in 2006. Or yes, in the current South American exhibit; a bit cramped but they've had pairs exhibited there before. But regardless, it should hopefully only be for a short period of time, since it was annonced that they would start excepting bids in January for the new Jaguar habitat to be built in the ROA. That was mentioned in the December 17th commission meeting minutes. See the link under Los Angeles Zoo News.

Thanks Blackduiker! I was amazed how many new kids there were the first time I went to the LA Zoo last year. ITs going to be fun watching them grow up.

Should we be concerned that the zoo doesn't know the sex of the giant anteater/black howler monkeys that have arrived? The anteater was a male though wasn't it? Are they breeding echidnas? Are there any on display?

Those designations are off - they surely know the sex of those animals.

There is an echidna on display in the koala exhibit. I've just seen the one, so I don't think that they are breeding them (but would be very happy to be wrong).
