Thanks for the update blackduiker. I had known about the yellow-back duiker calf for quite some time but I completely forgot to post it here.

With the zoo's history of pulling newborn hoofstock, I'm surprised we haven't seen the youngster in the Children's Zoo nursery. And I haven't seen either adult on exhibit on my last couple of visits. Maybe it's a bonding process going on behind-the-scenes.

Actually, I know about the birth because I saw a photo of the calf in the nursery...

Well I was just at the zoo today, and if its in the nursery it was playing hide-and-seek. Though there were baby Babirusa, Tufted Deer, Red-flanked Duiker and the ever-present Gerenuk everywhere.

Maybe it's been reintroduced back to the parents...

EDIT: I just saw your photo and the tufted deer is actually the Yellow-backed duiker calf.

Interesting new species. Will they take part in the recovery effort?

Yes they will.

Here is a quote on the zoo's website:
Last fall the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens signed on to participate in a mountain yellow-legged frog conservation project that is a joint effort of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the California Department of Fish & Game, the Chaffee Zoo in Fresno, and the center for Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES) at the San Diego Zoo. Mountain yellow-legged frogs are native to the larger mountain ranges throughout Southern California, and due primarily to habitat loss and the introduction of invasive species such as trout and bullfrogs, populations have declined drastically. The World Conservation Union (IUCN) classifies them as critically endangered.

This fall Animal Keeper Kyle Keas took part in fieldwork that involved the removal of rainbow trout in parts of the Angeles National Forest. Trout have been introduced in many streams throughout Southern California, where they are a favorite with fishermen, but they often spread into areas that are protected and eat a significant number of yellow-legged frog tadpoles. The goal is to keep the trout out of these areas. The other facet of the program will be setting up captive populations of the yellow-legs so that wild areas can be repopulated. Hopefully the Zoo will be able to eventually establish a breeding group off exhibit and expand its participation in this program.

Viewing ISIS today, I noticed there were 3 Giant Otter pups born. Anyone with any further information on these births? Hopefully a success this time.

Were these the offspring from last year, that didn't survive, still showing on the page nearly a year later?

The ones shown in ISIS are the same ones from before. Sometimes it takes a while for ISIS to get updated.

Blackduiker

A heads-up to anyone planning to visit soon. I was just there today, and a sign is posted in the Children's Zoo, on the former glass fronted Emperor Tamarin exhibit, announcing that the baby Komodo Dragons will be going on exhibit next week! I'll be in St. Louis from Wednesday through Saturday, arriving back on Sunday the 19th. I hope to get many more photographs at the St. Louis Zoo than during my prior trip in 2008. And since I'm taking the day off on Monday the 20th as well, I hope to be there to see the Komodos then. So mstickmanp or another one of our fellow local ZooChatters may be able to see them before me. I don't know how well any photographs will come out though; that space has never had very good lighting or visibility.

Thanks for the update Blackduiker. Last I heard they were planning in exhibiting them in the exhibit next to the nursery window, where the Prehensile-tailed Porcupine currently lives. I wonder if they decided to change it to the Emperor Tamarin exhibit because it is the one that gets the most sun.

Well they've had a sign up on my last two visits, stating the former Tamarin exhibit is being prepared for the baby Komodos. But I'd prefer the indoor space. Better lighting and much less reflection. And with 22 hatchlings, it's very possible we'll see them in both. Keep your cameras handy! There is no specific date given though, just "next week."

Wait, are you sure they are talking about the Emperor Tamarin exhibit? If it just said tamarin exhibit then it could still be the same exhibit I'm talking about.

No, we're talking Emperor Tamarin. The outdoor enclosure right at the entrance. There are a couple of signs posted there and referring to that particular space. You can even see the preparations being made inside the space.

I went to the zoo today and completely forgot to look. I guess all we could do is wait and see where the dragons are exhibited.

The Zoo announced on its Facebook page that several of the komodo hatchlings are now on exhibit in the Children's Zoo.

Also, when I was at the zoo on Sunday, the male and female servals were together in the exhibit and sleeping near each other in the same corner of the exhibit.
