Latin American Elephant Population

A few updates from South America:

Serva, one of the Asian elephants in São Paulo, passed away on July.

Princess, at Beto Carrero world, also died recently, though I am not sure when this happened. This leaves Baby as the only elephant at the park, which has recently closed its zoo. There were plans to send her to São Paulo, but thankfully, the transfer was denied by an NGO.

So have Pocha and Lady, from the Elephant Sanctuary in Chapada dos Guimarães.

Kuky, at Ecoparque Palermo (Buenos Aires, Argentina), has also died. This leaves the country with a population of three elephants.

For Africam Safari's African Elephant Herd the park has 20 individuals consisting of 13 males and 7 females. Only three of the males are mature bulls but still the park has quite a large amount of male calves which could present some interesting social groupings in the future. Not familiar with any other the other facilities holdings unfortunately.
Do you have names for the individuals there or were you only able to get a number update?

Princess was imported to the United States in the mid to late 1950s. I would dare to say she was one of the oldest elephants in South America. Do you know when Dell passed? Do you know the history of Baby?

Princess was surely one of the oldest elephants in South America, and perhaps, in the world. If I recall correctly, Beto Carrero World claimed she was in her eighties. I sadly do not have any info on her, neither on Dell's origin, though the latter passed away in 2015, a few months after I visited the park.

Log in to Facebook

If I am not mistaken, Baby was born in America and was imported in 1995 from somewhere in Florida. She is thirty-two years old.

Wow, thank you so much. It seems Baby was the elephant Tanya from Circus Tiani, born with Roman Schmitt at Busch Gardens in Florida. I knew Tanya had gone to Beto Carrero, but I did not realize they were the same animal.

Princess was definitely not in her 80s, but I would say late 60s. The oldest elephant in the Western Hemisphere is Susie at the Endangered Ark Foundation just a few miles down the road from me. She is in her early 70s.

Recently got to visit the facility with a friend of mine and asked one of the personal there.
OK, fine! I would yet wonder about names, dates of birth and which cows calved after 2020. ATT I had a quote of 7.9 individuals ... at Africam. Your figures seem to disagree with that.

However, these numbers are not completely accurate as the status of (EM) 0.1 Pamy at Bioparque Estrella México is uncertain. Also, recent social media posts* from Bioparque Estrella México show a female (0.1) African elephant. Any information on the status of Pamy and the identity of the African elephant at Bioparque Estrella México would be greatly appreciated.

If there are any other elephants that reside in Latin America that are not listed in the current population, please contribute to the thread as any assistance or information that could improve the data would be greatly appreciated.

If there are any other elephants that reside in Latin America that are not listed in the current population, please contribute to the thread as any assistance or information that could improve the data would be greatly appreciated.
Wait, Havana has no male elephants? I guess that's why no breeding has happened yet. I wonder how an elephant calf would do there, but I guess it would be amazing seeing it around so many hoofstock species.

It’s been a couple of years since the census of the Latin American elephant population was updated and an overview of the occurrences was published so the following post will publicize the current census and summarize the occurrences since June 2022.

According to EleWiki, Brama at Bioparque Estrella passed away from old age, date unknown. Pamy was still alive as of March 2023, and appears to still be alive today. Their African Elephant is a bull named Congo, who was wild-born in 1991.

Jamba, the male African elephant at Zoológico de Belo Horizonte, passed away at the age of 29 on June 26, 2025.

Elefante Jamba morre aos 29 anos no Zoológico de Belo Horizonte | O TEMPO
I was sort of expecting this ... as he was pushed over by one of the other 2 - as yet unnamed - cow elephants, collapsed and had to be raised up by staff.... It seems that quite possibly - allthough they seemed to have acted quite swiftly - that the time collapsed on his side that colic or major damage to his tissues and internal organs happened before he could be raised. A sorry loss as he was a magnificent bull....!

It's official! Kenya, the female African elephant at Ecoparque Mendoza and the last captive elephant in all of Argentina, is enroute to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil.

Kenya departed from Ecoparque Mendoza on July 4th, and her journey from Mendoza, Argentina to Mato Grosso, Brazil is expected to take five days. Kenya and the transport team will follow the same route Pocha and Guillermina, the mother-daughter pair of Asian elephants from Ecoparque Mendoza, took in May 2022.

Kenya will be joining Pupy, ESB's resident female African elephant who was relocated from Ecoparque Buenos Aires in April 2025. With her arrival, Kenya will be the second African elephant to join ESB's herd.

She will be the last elephant to come to ESB for a long time. It seems there are no plans to bring any more now that Tamy has passed.

Now Kenya is on the way to ESB, does anyone know about her past before coming to the zoo? I looked on multiple sights and it seems no information has been shared. I am curious on if she has any social skills? Pupy would have some as she has been around elephants, but Kenya has been alone for decades. So that is a huge unknown, and it could be an unpredictable situation.

You're completely wrong, Jamba never got pushed over by any of our cows in the zoo. Don't know where did you got this information, but this situation never happened to him or to any elephant that has lived in the Belo Horizonte zoo. And just to add over, all of our elephant always had names, and there weren't even more than two elephants at the zoo when he died, as he and axé were the last two living in the institution.

Also, as I've said on the Belo Horizonte zoo news's thread, he passed away in surgery after having some health complications and problems on one of his back legs. Please be very sure to know what you're talking about before taking any assumptions and specially before making an announcement like that. All of Belo Horizonte's crew made their best efforts to treat him the best as they could, and would never neglect not even the slightest care with him.
