Latin American Elephant Population

Sustaining captive elephant populations has been not yet become a battle we are winning in the US, despite concerted efforts for almost 30 years. Are there attempts to breed in South America, or has the population become too old? Do you foresee elephants gradually disappearing in South and Central America?

Based on the current statistics, I foresee the population of Asian and African elephants to eventually die out in South America, and possibly Central America. There are a few elephants of reproductive age who could breed however, the number of post-reproductive individuals exceeds the number of potential breeding candidates for sustaining a viable population. However, the herd of African elephants at Africam Safari has the potential to grow a sustainable population of African elephants in Central America as the herd consists of, presumably, nine (three.six) unrelated young adults, and has produced at least three calves in the past two years. Ultimately, it's highly probable that the South American population of Asian and African elephants, and the Central American population of Asian elephants, will continue to decline but the Central American population of African elephants could become sustainable if Africam Safari continues their breeding program.

Based on the current statistics, I foresee the population of Asian and African elephants to eventually die out in South America, and possibly Central America.

To be perfectly honest as much as I like elephants I would prefer that they do eventually decline and are slowly phased out of zoos within South America as ageing individuals pass away (I would add hippos , rhinos , giraffe and most Asian and African ungulates to that category of animals that I would like to see eventually phased out too) .

I just think this would be far better for the future of zoos in the region in terms of this kind of natural phasing out of exotics and ABC species as it would free up a lot of space, funds / resources and focus for the ex-situ conservation of native species.

As the century grinds on and we begin to see and feel the impacts of climate change and rising threats of extinction we will need to mobilize our efforts heavily towards conserving our native biodiversity. Many species will need to be brought into captivity and managed ex-situ if they are to survive and there is less space and funding available to achieve this purpose when this is directed towards Asian and African megafauna.

That said I love watching Sandro and Raisa and I know that I will certainly miss them when they are gone.

It has been seven months since the Central and South American population of Asian and African elephants was updated and an overview of recent developments was published, so the following post will publicize the current census and the latest news.

Since the last overview, two (0.2.0) Asian elephants and one (0.1.0) African elephant have died, two (0.2.0) Asian elephants have been transferred, and three (0.3.0) Asian elephants and one (0.1.0) African elephant have impending transfers. In addition, the death of two (0.2.0) Asian elephants and one (0.1.0) African elephant from the previous overview have been included in this edition as additional information was published, or changes in the information were made, regarding their passing.

Since the last census, two (0.2.0) Asian elephants and five (1.3.1) African elephants have been added to the population. These individuals reside at Estrella Biopark México, Yumká Safari Park, Hacienda Nápoles Theme Park, and Africam Safari, respectively. The identity and status of these elephants were validated through the information collected from the sources provided below.

In addition, at least four African elephants (one adult bull, two adult cows, and one adolescent cow) have been identified at the Havana National Zoo. However, to my knowledge, the exact number, given names, definitive genders, and precise ages of the African elephants at the institution are not publicly known. Any assistance or information that could validate the identity and status of the African elephants at the Havana National Zoo is greatly appreciated.

Also, one (0.1.0) Asian elephant and one (0.1.0) African elephant have been removed from the population since the last census. These individuals resided at the Zulia Metropolitan Zoo and Hacienda Nápoles Theme Park, respectively. The status of these elephants were invalidated as one lacked any current status while the other lacked sources to prove its existence.

Currently, there are 33 (6.27.0) Asian elephants and 38 (14.23.1) African elephants in Central and South America. Of the 33 Asian elephants, 10 (3.7.0) reside at institutions in Central America while 23 (3.20.0) reside at institutions in South America. Also, of the 38 African elephants, 21 (8.12.1) reside at institutions in Central America while 17 (6.11.0) reside at institutions in South America. Due to the lack of definitive information, the 4 (1.3.0) African elephants at the Havana National Zoo were not included in the following data.

The status of 45 year old 0.1 Danu, an Asian elephant at the Zulia Metropolitan Zoo, is unknown. Because her last status update was in April of 2011 and recent sources state 1.0 Tony as the only elephant at the Zulia Metropolitan Zoo, Danu has been removed from the population.

The identity of assumed 40 year old 0.1 Randy, an African elephant at Hacienda Nápoles Theme Park, is nonexistent. Because there are no primary sources that validate this individual’s existence and the identity of two African elephants named Junior and Rani were recently validated, Randy has been removed from the population.

It's official! Mara, the Asian elephant, is on the road to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil! She departed from the Buenos Aries Ecopark on May 9th and crossed the border between Argentina and Brazil on May 11th. Her relocation, which was originally anticipated for late March/early April, was postponed in late March as the border between the two countries was temporarily closed due to COVID-19. Fortunately, however, the transport team in Argentina and Brazil were recently given the authorization to relocate Mara. The Argentine team transported Mara to the border where Scott and the Brazilian team then took responsibility for transporting Mara the rest of the way. Mara is expected to arrive at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil by mid-week this week.

It will be better that way. She will receive much better care in the sanctuary and the two African cows in Buenos Aires will have a little more space (but it is still not enough).

While I do agree that Kuki and Pupi, the remaining elephants at the Buenos Aries Ecopark, will now have greater freedom in Mara's absence, such as having access to the outdoor enclosure and the indoor holding area at the same time, I don't necessarily agree that Mara will receive "better" care at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil than she did at the Buenos Aires Ecopark. Before her relocation, Mara received exceptional care and unconditional love from her caregivers and veterinarians at the Buenos Aries Ecopark, some of whom had worked with her for years, just as she will from the caregivers and veterinarians at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. What differentiates the Buenos Aires Ecopark from Elephant Sanctuary Brazil is the latter of the two's ability to provide Mara with greater environmental stimuli and companionship with others of her species. Even though sanctuary is the ideal place for captive elephants to live out their twilight years, one has to also consider the care and love they received from their former caregivers prior to sanctuary. :)

Mara has already arrived at the sanctuary.

0.1 Mara arrived at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil on May 13, 2020 after a 1710 mile (2752 km) journey from the Buenos Aries Ecopark.

Welcome Home, Mara!! | Global Sanctuary for Elephants

Since her arrival, Mara has been exploring her new surroundings and settling into sanctuary life quite well. In addition, Mara has since been introduced to Rana, one of the sanctuary's resident elephants. After a successful introduction with a barrier in between them, Mara and Rana were given the opportunity to share the same space, and the two of them have since developed a strong affinity for one another. Mara has also been introduced to Maia, another resident elephant at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. Even though Mara hasn't befriended Maia as quickly as she did with Rana, interactions between the two of them have been positive. In addition to Rana and Maia sharing the same space as Mara, Lady, the third resident elephant at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, has too. However, Lady has kept her distance so she and Mara have yet to interact with one another.

Since the Buenos Aires Ecopark is looking to rehome Kuki and Pupi as well, and Elephant Sanctuary Brazil has nearly completed the female African elephant habitat, would Elephant Sanctuary Brazil consider taking in Kuki and Pupi to provide them with a forever home (and sanctuary), in addition to companionship for Kenya, the African elephant that's being relocated from the Mendoza Ecopark in the near future?

I didn't know that Buenos Aires also wanted to get Kuki and Pupi away. I think it is very likely that in the end they will also go to the sanctuary. Mendoza also plans to move all elephants to the sanctuary. I think if Kuki and Pupi move, there is no other option in South America either than sanctuary. (Other elephant enclosures are also mostly bad).

I have just noticed that the 2 female african elephants at Leon zoo in Guanajuato Mexico are not mencioned here at all.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention, @carlos55. I was unaware that the León Zoo has elephants. Based on the following information: Parque Zoológico de León Elefante africano & David y Mara - Zoológico de León | Facebook, the León Zoo has two African elephants, however, one of them is a cow while the other is a bull.

European EEP is now looking for a place for at least 14 growing Asian bulls within next years. Maybe Central or South American zoos can take some?

Technically, within a next decade, Europe could start exporting Asian elephants, as long as the receiving institutions have modern enclosures and will take equal number or more bulls than cows.

They are absolutely not needed and that would not be a good idea at all IMO.

There is a need to focus on native species and biodiversity conservation in this region of the world within zoos.

Obtaining elephants should just not be a priority for zoos here but no doubt some zoos will try to attempt this.

Unfortunately, the numbers have gone down. Haisa (F), from the Sorocaba zoo has passed away. She had lived there since 1995. Now Sandro is all by himself. I hope he goes to Rio de Janeiro, since Koala is alone as well.

This is quite a shock, I didn't hear about this yet, poor old Haisa...

Very sad for Sandro too as he is alone now after so many years together with Haisa.
