Zoo Leipzig Leipzig zoo news 2013

Several animals from the flooded Tierpark Bernburg arrived (meerkats, birds, wallabies, guenons, Yellow-spotted rock hyrax for example).

Two Nepalese red pandas and a Reeve's muntjac were born. 10 Lesser brazilian teal and two Black-headed Ibis hatched.

Two Indian Sloth bears, imported from India three months ago, were shipped to Berlin Zoo to breed there...

Berlin Zoo has just refurbished / renovated their outside bear yards. Looks 200% better than ever before (viz spectacled bear habitat in Krefeld Zoo).

The outdoor area looks better, unfortunately the old indoor area is the same and not good to breed sloth bears.

Do you mean Duisburg?

I'd agree that the changes at Berlin represent a vast improvement - certainly from a visitor's point of view, with huge windows through which to observe.

As is noted above by Bjoern, the indoor dens remain as they were - that is, pretty functional.

Historically, have Berlin had any joy in breeding sloth bears using these dens?

They bred two bears in the 70s, two in 2002, one in 2004 and one in 2008 successfully.

As is well known indoor accommodation for bears hardly needs to be glamorous-in fact "cosy" tends to work best for a female bear to give birth.... a fact confirmed by Bjoerns rather contradictory statements!

Eastern black rhino NAIMA (born at Leipzig, 10.12.2011, NDUGU x SARAFINE) was shipped to Rotterdam Zoo yesterday.

Western chimpanzee females FIFI and GERTRUDIA (both 20 years old) were shipped to Basel Zoo.

Western chimpanzee QUAMISHA (born at Basel Zoo in 1993) arrived from Basel.

Eastern black rhino born to NDUGU (born at Berlin Zoo in 1995) and NANDI (born at Leipzig Zoo in 1999) last night.
