Zoo Leipzig Leipzig zoo news 2013

Two Scimitar-horned oryx, three Maned wolves and two Myanmar thamin were born.

Grizzled giant squirrels arrived, Dahomey dwarf cattle left the collection in preparation for the construction of the new rhino area.

Some Siberian musk deers were shipped to a zoo in Finland, Kowaris to Frankfurt, Poznan and Budapest.

No detailed information, at least one brace to breed in the quarantine building. I do not know where they're from, but I supposed from Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Wester lowland gorilla born to ABEEKU (born at Rotterdam Zoo in 1999) and KIBARA (born at Leipzig Zoo in 2004).

Excellent news regarding the maned wolf births; even more excellent news about the import of grizzled giant squirrels :)

That is great news, the fantastic pomgoland gorilla exhibit will be a even better place to visit with a diverse activie diverse troop.

VERA, the last Baikal seal in Europe, died last week at the age of 21.

I don't usually comment on posts like this one, but it has saddened me that there are no more of these charismatic little pinnipeds left in Europe, rather sad.

It is indeed rather sad.

By the by, though there are a few places in Russia holding the species as BjoernN notes, the validity of saying they count as European collections is rather undermined when one considers that one of the collections is located *at* Lake Baikal, not far from the Mongolian border :p

According to the Pongoland head keeper, a second gorilla female is pregnant and is going to give birth soon.

I think BjoernN was being wry and referring to the many wild Baikal seals within Russian territory.

(I'm never sure what to do with Russia. It is a European country but the vast majority of its area is clearly within Asia. Does Vladivostok count as Europe, for example, simply because it is within the over-bloated country of Russia?)

The Zoological Garden of Yaroslavl and the Aquarium of Sochi geographically belong to Europe...

Like or dislike: Russia is and should be counted among European nations.
I wish we would not make such a fuss about it, sure EAZA does not with various Russian and an Ukranian zoos within the European zoos network. So, I believe also Kazakhstan, Estonia and Latvia. Plus vis a vis several zoos within the Middle East.

Two healthy Spotted hyena were born to DAVE and DARA (both born at Leipzig Zoo in 2011 to KITANO and LUBANGA).
