Zoo Leipzig Leipzig Zoo News 2024

1,0 VUNGU
0,1 SARAFINE, 0,1 SABA, 0,1 MABURI
If we make any projections as to potential breeders ....: I believe both Sarafine and Saba are a no hoper. Only F Maburi has any genuine chance at breeding / mating with male Vungu (proven).

I know for a fact that the rhinos do not feel comfortable with the indoor stalls and public viewing and talkway from above. I do believe their old stalls and shed were infinitely better, being detached, secluded and giving the - fairly sensitive to disturbance - black rhinos privacy.

Why Is that?
F Saba (b. 1991) is already 33 years old and has 2 living offspring, her daughter Sarafine (b. 2000) and years later, a M Sudan (b. 2017). F Saba has not bred successfully since 2017.

F Sarafine has one living offspring, Naima (b. 2011), who is the breeding female at Rotterdam Zoo. F Sarafine also has not bred successfully since, allthough she gave birth to a M calf in 2014 (which only lived 12 days). F Sarafine has not bred successfully since 2014.

Both cows bred with the former breeding male N'Dugu. N'Dugu passed away in 2021 aged 24. Relatively young for a breeding male.

The 3rd F Maburi had her first calf M Hodari in 2014. Her second calf F Maisha was born in 2018.

The only bull M Vungu arrived in Leipzig in May 2022. Leipzig Zoo is planning to have him mated to F Maburi. First introductions have occured in 2024.

Zoo Leipzig also announced this on their Facebook today.

They live together with three white-faced sakis (a pair + young) in the walk-through enclosure in Gondwanaland, which until recently housed the squirrel monkeys.

The squirrel monkeys are now behind the scenes waiting to be moved to another zoo.

To any zoo enthusiasts, I need help with the whereabouts of some species in the zoo. I will be visiting Leipzig in the near future for the first time and this will help me visiting the place more efficiently.

Here is the list:

Short-eared elephabnt shrew
Visayan Hornbill
Woolly-necked Stork
Eastern Quoll
Kowari
Ansell's Mole Rat
Fat Sand Rat

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I will be fly in from the US. I try not to miss anything.
