An injured Leopard Seal has come ashore on a beach in New Zealand's capital city Wellington.

A dangerous Antarctic marine creature has turned up on Wellington's south coast.

Leopard seals, usually from Antarctic and subantarctic regions, have slender bodies, large heads and massive jaws, and had been known to kill people, Conservation Department spokesman Matt Barnett said.

''Apart from a human, it's probably the most dangerous mammal you are likely to encounter on New Zealand shores.''

The leopard seal - estimated to be 2m long - appeared to be unwell and was lying on its side in the surf at the airport end of Lyall Bay, a witness said.

Barnett said the seals, which occasionally made their way to New Zealand shores, had killed people in Antarctica when looking for something to eat, he said.

About three or four of them had found their way to the North Island in recent years, though they were more common on the South Island.

''Our advice is to stay well clear of them. They will make a mess of your dog.

''The seals prey on a variety of species including fish and seabirds and are the only seals known to hunt and kill warm-blooded prey, including other seals.

Barnett advised people to keep dogs and small children well away from the seal, avoid getting within 20 metres of it, not to get between it and the water, and not to feed or touch it.

Carmel Levy, from the Ekim burger caravan on Lyall Bay, called Department of Conservation when she arrived to work about 10am.

The seal had a cut up back tail and some onlookers had speculated it had a broken back - though this was unconfirmed.

''There was a few people on the beach earlier who thought it was a good idea to get a stick and push it back in the sea,'' she said.

Others had got very close to the creature and it had tried to shuffle away, she said.

The article makes it sound like the seal is some sort of Viking raider. Lock up your daughters and livestock folks!

Also, the article didn't say whether any medical aid would be given to the seal. "Keep clear of the beast and maybe it will go away and leave us in peace."

I think they are just trying to stress that people don't interfere with it at all.

I doubt very much that any vet assistance will be given to it. DOC tends to be extremely hands-off in this type of situation.

there was one in Christchurch a week ago. I wonder if it's the same one.

The Wellington one was sedated to be moved to the Wellington zoo hospital but it died on the way there.

The one in this article?

Leopard Seal At Lyall Bay Dies | Stuff.co.nz
An Antarctic marine creature on Wellington's south coast has died while being transferred for treatment.

The leopard seal, which appeared hurt, was first spotted on Lyall Bay this morning.

A Wellington Zoo spokeswoman said staff, along with staff from SPCA, yesterday went to the beach to anaesthetise the seal to take it to the zoo for treatment.

But it died en-route. It had already been evaluated as being very unwell, with a large abscess on its neck which meant it could not eat. Onlookers also saw damage to its tail.

I think there's an error in there because it says it was first spotted this morning, but zoo and SPCA staff went to the beach yesterday to catch it....

Well thats sad. I didn't see that article, but the one I posted is one of the main stories on Stuff atm, and they really should have ammended it appropriately.

To be fair though, its not quite as bad as the mistake they made last week...

the news of it dying was only about 30 minutes ago (after you posted your article). I checked yours because I thought they would have updated it but they hadn't.

Radio New Zealand : News : National : Leopard seal dies after washing up in Wellington
An ailing leopard seal that washed up on Lyall Bay in the capital on Friday has died under anaesthetic on the way to Wellington Zoo.

The 1.5m mammal was thousands of kilometres away from its natural habitat in Antarctic and sub Antarctic waters.

Zoo veterinarian Lisa Argilla says the animal was in poor condition, extremely skinny and could barely move when she assessed it at the beach on Friday afternoon.

"It's got a really massive lump in its throat; it smells terrible when it opens its mouth and what I suspect is going on is that it's got a really huge abscess blocking up its oesophagus. So I think the poor animal hasn't actually been able to eat for many weeks and it's just been starving and it's just washed up because it is so weak and really, really unwell."

Dr Argilla says the zoo will probably incinerate the seal when a post mortem has been conducted in case it has an infectious disease.

Wellington SPCA staff rushed to the scene on Friday morning and set up a cordon around the seal to protect it. Department of Conservation staff were also on hand.
