Life of Pi

we (me and my family) will be going to either life of pi, or the hobbit. so is the life of pi any good, it does from the advert.

bonus question: afterwards we will be going to the filling station restraunt. Do you have that in the US?

I saw the film tonight. It's very long but beautiful. I read the book and it's a very good adaptation.

The early scenes take place in a zoo and the opening titles show various close up shots of animals in a zoo. I thought to myself that they must be Taipei Zoo, mainly because there was a black swan with Malayan tapirs.

I waited to the end of the credits and I was right - it was Taipei! My friend said 'only you could identify a zoo from a shot of a swan'.

She's clearly never seen Zoochat...

My wife saw it yesterday with a friend and they enjoyed it to. She said that her friend was one of those who, during the movie, laughs loudly, jumps at every scary moment, shouts "look behind you", and cries. That, I understand, was just as entertaining as the movie. :D

Nice to know which zoo it was; I trust their elephants are real, and not CGI hybrids.

There is at least one CGI elephant that shows charactertics of both Asian & African -- possibly what Motty would have looked like as an adult.

Yes, saw it on Hogmanay, absolutely brilliant. I would definitely reccomend it.
I do think the elephant was cgi, since I could not tell if it was Asian or African.
My only question is this. In the finishing credits, it said tiger trainer, so that ment there was a real tiger. Obviously the boat partwas cgi, but Idon't remember any scenes were there was a real tiger?

Four real Tigers were actually used during the making of the movie. My friend's mom thought the whole movie was made with a real Tiger so that just shows how good the CGI is!

one of the tigers they used in the filming was actually Kevin Bacon in a tiger suit.

I guess I never mentioned it but I finished the book- and it was GREAT!! I loved it! I'm to watch in a few minutes!

Just saw the movie and it was great, too! Although it wasn't as good as the book which is almost always the case. The whole journey at sea took place way too quickly IMO but the ending was good and made it worth it for me. I actually did find it quite difficult to figure out when Richard Parker was real or CGI at some points and was a real hyena used at all!? I certainly looked like it! By the way, that elephant was quite strange. I couldn't see it in the preview but now watching the actual movie it looked as though it had an African's head and and an Asian's body to put it in a less detailed description.

Even for a zoochatter that's pretty impressive. I didn't even notice the swan (I was quizzing my little sister on the tapirs). A lot of the opening shots seemed to be mixed; but it was nice to see a proboscis monkey anyway. It's been years since I read it but didn't the book mention Nilgiri tahr? I was hoping for a glimpse of those if Ang Lee could manage.

Just came across this thread :) Lee Ang just won best director for this movie at the Oscars but the movie lost out to Argo in the best picture category.

I too was waiting and hoping for the Nilgiri tahr. Shame...

And speaking of the proboscis monkey. After seeing one in Pi's families zoo, and hearing Pi's dad say they were selling most of the animals to North American Zoos, did anyone on here wonder "Ohhh where were the proboscis monkeys going???" Before the ship sank that is...

The movie is very good In my opinion (as I've already said). sorry for the cliche, but I'm only 50 pages into the book and I can honestly say: The book is better, as it has much more about zoo philosophy.
