Lincoln Park Zoo Lincoln Park Zoo 2008-2014

Thank you, tropicworld for this great link. When i studied in Chicago in the eighties some of these old exhibits at LPZ were still there. I remember the old duck pond that appears there. Judy the indian elephant lived in that old elephant barn shown in the pictures. The lion house and monkey house ( they had those names on signs) were already being rebuilt. The old sea lion pool shown in the pictures was gone, replaced by the current one. Amazing to see the keepers with the black bears. There seems to be a whooping crane in picture 15.

Went to the zoo for the first time in years the other day (7/30/14) and while I had a very enjoyable visit, I was surprised to find the Arabian Oryx is no longer on display, a species that gradually grew on me as a kid. Does anyone know when the last one was died or shipped away?

The Bearline seemed empty - just the lone polar bear and lone sun bear - although signs were still up for Hyenas and Andean bears. I suspect those two species are gone entirely. A bit sad to see the Spectacled and Sun bears go, since Brookfield has recently discarded the former and the latter is at no other local zoo, but I look forward to the next exhibits.

The Andean bear (Manny) was moved to the Alexandria Zoo in Louisiana. I'm not sure yet where the sun bear or spotted hyenas have ended up at.

As of July 30th, Manny and the spotted Hyena had left, though I'm not sure where for. Anana was still there and her goodbye was discussed here. The Sun Bear was also still present but I'm not sure of it's fate. I'd never had the pleasure of encountering the Sun Bear before, and I never saw Manny ever. Chicago's spectacled bears at both zoos seemed quite elusive.

What I Thought of Lincoln Park Zoo

In 2010, I visited Lincoln Park Zoo while vacationing in Chicago. It was free- such a relief after Brookfield Zoo not taking the reciprocity on the card! We saw the-
Hoofstock exhibits. I remember there was a baby zebra there. I saw Sichuan takins for the first time.
Regenstein Center for African Apes.
African Journey. THE. BEST. A pygmy hippo swam right up to the glass. That was nice after Cleveland's pygmy hippo dying.
Lion House. Ugh. The gift shop was bad, the cats were pacing, and screaming children were everywhere. Trash.

New species - the Chacoan Peccary at the Antelope-Zebra area.

@cloudedleopard: Lincoln Park has had pygmy hippos for years and their lone pygmy hippo's always been a pretty active fellow. My favorite exhibit at the whole of LPZ.

Does anyone know where the Sun bear was moved to? He's our favorite animal and we didn't know he was being moved until after he was already gone.

Thanks!
