Lincoln Park Zoo’s Kolver Lion house to get $30M makeover.

The Lion House at Lincoln Park Zoo is getting a complete makeover. Zoo officials will make the announcement today. The Kovler Lion House update will be the zoo’s biggest capital project yet– and will cost an estimated $30 million. No word on a timetable to get the project done. The zoo’s tigers will likely move to other zoos. Zoo officials say they want to better showcase the lions’ habitat. The zoo’s main and east entrance is also set for an upgrade.

Surprised to hear about the Lion House but I'm glad the zoo plans to do something about it. I'm hoping, like the previous penguin situation, the zoo has a long-term plan to re-integrate tigers into the collection, and maybe another species of bear or amur leopards or something. Here's hoping the new lion exhibit is a stunner.

I'm not especially impressed with the new polar bear exhibit and it sounds like a lot of the best improvements are the zookeeping ones, although obviously access to grass is good for the animals. I'm not disappointed, it's an obvious improvement, it's just not something it's easy to make a point of?

It sounds like penguins are on track to open around the same time again, too. Cool.

Well didn't they spend like 20 million on the two exhibits? I don't even think that's enough for the bear exhibit alone.

20 million can sure build a polar bear exhibit, but it ain't gonna be no Arctic Ring of Life.

Detroit's Polar Bear exhibit cost $15.9 million in 2001. That's equivalent to $21.6 million today.

Max, Brookfield Zoo's adult male Amur tiger, has been shipped to the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Brookfield Zoo's two youngest gray seal brothers, Charles and Ziggy, have recently moved to the Lincoln Park Zoo.
